Devon Dairy Farms is looking for an experienced and motivatedAssistant Farm Manager (2IC) to join our team in the stunning Hāwea region. This is an outstanding opportunity for someone who enjoys taking ownership, leading from the front, and working within a well-structured, systems-driven farming operation.

Working alongside the Farm Manager, you'll play a key role in the day-to-day running of a large-scale dairy farm, helping deliver excellent results in animal welfare, milk quality, pasture management, environmental compliance, and team performance.

This role will suit someone who takes pride in doing the basics exceptionally well, follows systems and procedures, and understands what it takes to run a successful dairy farm every day.

About You

We're looking for a capable and dependable dairy farming professional who:

• Has previous experience in a Herd Manager or Assistant Farm Manager role
• Has experience working on larger dairy farms, ideally800+ cows
• Is confident stepping into the Farm Manager's shoes when required
• Thrives in a structured, roster-based farming environment
• Leads by example and maintains high standards across all aspects of the farm
• Has excellent stockmanship and works quietly and calmly around livestock
• Is committed to continual improvement and doing things right the first time

Key Skills & Experience

To be successful in this role, you'll ideally have:

Animal Health & Welfare

• A strong commitment to animal welfare and best-practice husbandry
• Proven ability to identify and treat lameness
• Experience implementing animal health plans and monitoring herd health
• Excellent stock sense and a calm, patient approach with cows

Milking & Dairy Operations

• High milk quality standards and attention to detail
• A strong understanding of rotary dairy shed operations and mechanics
• Exceptional shed hygiene standards
• Confidence training and supporting others to maintain milk quality and dairy hygiene standards

Farm Technology

• Experience using animal wearables and herd monitoring technology
• Good record-keeping and data management skills

Machinery & Equipment

• Strong tractor operating skills, including:
  • Front loader work
  • Feeding out
  • Mowing
  • General machinery operation
• A mechanical mindset would be a real advantage, although not essential

Farm Systems & Infrastructure

• Understanding of effluent management and environmental compliance
• Working knowledge of pivot irrigation and K-Line systems
• Experience with general farm maintenance and repairs, including fencing and routine R&M work

Organisation & Leadership

• Ability to follow and implement established farm procedures and daily plans
• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
• Ability to lead day-to-day operations in the Farm Manager's absence
