The John Olson Advanced Manufacturing Center provides hands-on, interdisciplinary learning opportunities in advanced manufacturing technologies and engineering concepts through a cross-curricular approach that connects classroom learning with a factory environment and industry collaboration.

The Mechanical Engineer supports the Center’s academic, research, and industry activities by ensuring the safe, reliable, and effective operation of its manufacturing equipment, machinery, tools, facilities, and associated systems. The position is primarily responsible for maintaining operational readiness through preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting and repair, equipment documentation, safety support, and user training, including coordination with vendors and UNH Environmental Health & Safety. The position also provides operational support to companies co-located within the Center, including assistance with deliveries, material and equipment movement, and facility logistics.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance, Operations & Safety – 50% (10 hours/week)

• Perform routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance of equipment, machinery, tools, and associated systems.

• Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and control-system issues on equipment such as CNC machines, robotic systems, additive manufacturing equipment, and metrology equipment.

• Maintain equipment in safe, operational condition and identify maintenance, reliability, or safety concerns.

• Diagnose equipment issues reported by students, faculty, staff, and other authorized users, determining appropriate troubleshooting or repair.

• Coordinate repairs and service with vendors, contractors, faculty, and staff.

• Maintain equipment maintenance schedules, service records, inventories, and documentation.

• Develop and update equipment SOPs.

• Support equipment installation, modification, relocation, and commissioning/decommissioning.

Safety & Equipment Training – 20% (4 hours/week)

• Provide training to faculty, staff, students, and other authorized users on safe equipment operation.

• Coordinate equipment-specific training and authorization.

• Work with UNH Environmental Health & Safety on inspections, safety requirements, corrective actions, and applicable training.

• Support safe practices involving machinery, lifting equipment, machine tools, PPE, and other manufacturing hazards.

• Maintain appropriate safety and training documentation.

CEPS/TSC Technical Support – 10% (2 hours/week)

• Provide equipment maintenance, repair, fabrication, and technical support to other CEPS laboratories and programs as needed. 

• Assist with technical projects, demonstrations, and outreach activities.

Research & Project Support – 10% (2 hours/week)

• Provide technical consultation on equipment design, fabrication, modification, and repair for teaching and research projects.

• Support undergraduate and graduate projects involving manufacturing equipment and systems.

• Provide technical assistance to faculty and industry partners as time permits.

Co-located Company Support – 10% (2 hours/week)

• Assist co-located companies with use of Center equipment, machinery, tools, and shared manufacturing resources.

• Coordinate and support deliveries, shipments, material handling, equipment moves, and other facility logistics.

• Serve as a technical point of contact for routine equipment and facility needs associated with companies operating within the Center.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related scientific/technical field.

• Experience troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing mechanical systems and equipment, including pumps, motors, and hydraulic systems.

• Experience with mechanical design, fabrication, construction, carpentry, and/or machine shop practices.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Basic knowledge of electrical/electronic systems, including reading schematics and using diagnostic equipment; basic programming skills and ability to learn equipment control and data acquisition software.

• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, co-located companies, vendors, contractors, and external partners.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to safely perform the essential functions of the position, including the use of required PPE and work requiring manual dexterity and physical strength.

Compensation Pay Range:

$17.50 /hour
