Associate General Counsel, Robotics

Meta seeks a talented product attorney to serve as Associate General Counsel supporting Meta Robotics Studio. This role is product-focused and will involve close coordination with engineering, machine learning, hardware, policy, and other cross-functional partners to advise on a broad range of issues globally as we build robots.

Almost nothing about this work has been done before. Robotics law is largely unwritten, and the questions this role takes on will often have no precedent, no settled guidance, and no playbook to work from. We are looking for an attorney who finds that energizing rather than unsettling: someone who reasons from first principles, gets comfortable fast with hard technical subject matter, and can chart a path forward through ambiguity. You will build the frameworks rather than inherit them, and what you build becomes how the program operates. This is a multi-year commitment and a rare chance to own a program's legal foundation from the beginning.

We are looking for a candidate who has a solid understanding of laws and principles as they apply to consumer hardware and AI products, is motivated, collaborates well, and can practically weigh and manage legal risks.

Responsibilities

• Take on novel legal questions with no clear answer, reason them through from first principles, and deliver practical, strategic advice our product and engineering teams can act on
• Analyze new products, features, and business models to identify and mitigate legal risks across multiple jurisdictions
• Advise on a broad range of legal subject areas, including AI regulatory, hardware, trade, consumer protection, data protection, privacy, competition, intellectual property, product safety, workplace safety and emerging legal frameworks
• Advise machine learning teams on dataset and model licensing, provenance, third-party model use, and how evolving global AI regulation applies to model development and data collection
• Carry the hardware program's legal arc from prototype through development to manufacturing at scale, including product safety, certification, trade, and supply-chain risk, in partnership with our specialists
• Evaluate, draft, and negotiate contracts relating to strategic partnerships, manufacturing and supply, data collection, and services integrated into our products
• Work directly with product and technical teams to build your product knowledge and use that knowledge to provide front-line legal and strategic business advice across multiple jurisdictions
• Drive high-profile, high-impact projects involving legal analysis and compliance with cross-functional stakeholders and subject matter experts both within Meta's legal department (such as privacy, product safety, trade, and IP) and across the business (such as policy, communications, and marketing) to analyze and communicate legal risks
• Build the frameworks, playbooks, and templates that let this function scale, and build influential relationships with executives and product teams across Reality Labs
• Influence product and business decisions, ensuring alignment with legal and regulatory requirements
• Proactively identify and address potential legal roadblocks, developing plans to mitigate risks

Minimum qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution
• Active and in good standing bar license in at least one U.S. state or equivalent foreign bar license. Where the jurisdiction of licensure differs from the location in which the role is based, the ability to promptly obtain permission to practice law for Meta in that location
• 8+ years of legal experience as a practicing attorney, including at a law firm, in-house, or in government
• Demonstrated ability to work in the face of ambiguity and to reason from first principles where precedent and settled guidance do not exist
• Demonstrated experience providing legal advice on technology, internet, or media products and services
• Effective communication, legal writing, and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated business judgment, client counseling, and strategic thinking skills
• Proven track record of delivering results with large-scale, cross-functional projects in a fast-paced environment
• Experience making decisions in the face of ambiguity and evolving priorities Track record of solving legal problems with no established answer, and of building the frameworks that made them repeatable
• 5+ years of in-house experience advising product and engineering teams directly
• Experience advising media, internet, or technology companies, preferably robotics, consumer electronics, wearables, automotive, or on-device AI
• Experience taking a physical product from prototype to volume manufacturing, including product safety and certification
• Experience advising on model development and training, dataset licensing and provenance, AI/ML governance, and emerging AI regulation
• Substantial privacy and data protection experience, including consent mechanisms and connected-device and sensor data
• Demonstrated legal and business judgment, technical acumen, and strategic thinking, along with experience working independently and cross-functionally
• Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
• Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
• Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
