Dually reporting to the Collaborating Physician and the Administrative Director, the licensed and credentialed Nurse Practitioner (NP) Emergency Medicine provides diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and follow-up under the direction of one or more physicians in the clinic or inpatient setting. The NP performs age and specialty appropriate physical examinations and preventive health measures within prescribed guidelines. As an expert professional, the Nurse Practitioner is responsible and accountable for the application of the nursing process, supervision of clinical practice, research involvement, consultative services, inter and intradepartmental liaison, education, leadership and patient care management across the health care continuum from preventative, acute care through discharge. Will help support the oversight of students.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

1.Clinical Practice 

 

1.1 Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to patients and families according toestablished collaborativeprotocols and standards of care. 

1.2 Sets priorities forappropriate and efficient management of patient care that reflects cost effective management oftime, available human resources, supplies, and equipment. 

1.3 Performs physical examinations and provides preventive health measures within prescribed guidelines andappropriate to patient needs. 

1.4 Orders, interprets, and evaluatesappropriate lab and diagnostic tests to assess patient's clinical problems and healthcare needs. 

1.5 Based on outcome of diagnostic, lab, and physical assessment findings, arranges forappropriate plan of care andfollow-up. 

1.6 Records pertinent patient care findings in the medical record. 

1.7 Maintains interdisciplinary approach to planning and communicating patient care information by discussing patientdata withappropriate physicians and other health care professionals. 

1.8 Evaluates outcomes of patient care and makes necessary revisionsin patient care. 

1.9 Seeks and provides consultative services asrequired. 

1.10 Through patient education and counseling,incorporates the concepts of health maintenance, prevention, andpromotion into daily practice. 

1.11 Demonstrates awareness of community resources andassists staff, patients, and families to effectivelyutilize them. 

 1.12 Notifies supervisor when patients in age groupsnot regularly servedpresent and seeksassistance from individualswith the knowledge of the specialized needs of such patient age groups. 

1.13 NP’s providing inpatient care may provide surgical assists and 

non-surgical procedures. 

 

2. Professional Development 

 

2.1 In collaboration withappropriate physicians,assists in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision ofnurse practitioner guidelines, policies, procedures, and protocols. 

2.2 Demonstrates leadership skills in problem solving with and directing designated personnel in assigned clinical area. 

2.3 Maintains current knowledge of legislation that may affect the health care delivery system and the function of thenurse practitioner in hospitaland clinicsettings. 

2.4Serves on nursing and hospital committees when requested and refersappropriate information to variousdepartmental and hospital committees as needed. 

2.5 Educates patients, families, and professionals through the development of educational materials, in-services, formal lectures, and/or publications.  

 

3. Quality Assessment/improvement and Research 

  

3.1 Consistentlyparticipates in the quality assessment/improvement program for the service. 3.2 Based on quality improvementfindings,identifiesappropriate follow-up quality improvement projects or research studies.  

3.3 Utilizes quality improvement data and research findings to enhance patient care

JOB REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • NP-focusedMaster’s of Nursing Program; no prior experiencerequired.  

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior experience insimilar clinical setting/specialty preferred. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with authorization by the Board of Registration in Nursing to practice in an expanded role. 

  • ActiveMassachusetts license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. 

  • Registered with thespecialtyor other accrediting organization for Nurse Practitioners. 

  • Registered with the State of Massachusetts and DEA for prescription writing privileges. 

  • Current BLS Certification. 

  • National NP Board certification 

  • ACLS Certification dependent on specialty. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS PREFERRED:

  • Certifications may be specific to the position’s specialty.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs):

  • Expert clinical judgment and ability to be self-directive anddemonstrate initiative in an expanded role. 

  • Demonstrated critical thinking, problemsolving and conflict resolution skills. 

  • Full command (verbal and written) of the English language. 

  • Demonstrated ability to apply principles of adult learning to provide effective patient and/or family education. 

  • Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work. 

  • Effective interpersonal skills tofacilitate communication with the various members of the health care team,patients and families. 

  • Computerproficiency inclusive of the ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information

Compensation Range:

$109,000.00- $158,000.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
