Engineering BOM Audit Tech

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Engineering BOM Technician is responsible for maintaining the accuracy, integrity, and configuration control of Engineering Bills of Material (BOMs) throughout the product lifecycle. This position performs detailed BOM audits, creates and manages Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), participates in Engineering Change Notice (ECN) review and approval processes, and coordinates the implementation of approved engineering changes across manufacturing operations.

The Engineering BOM Technician is responsible for communicating ECN changes to affected departments, documenting implementation dates and change activity within the AS400 system, and ensuring product documentation remains current and accurate. This role collaborates closely with Engineering, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Quality, and Warehouse personnel to address material shortages, identify and evaluate substitute components, and support uninterrupted production operations.

By ensuring accurate product structures, controlled engineering changes, and timely implementation of approved revisions, the Engineering BOM Technician plays a critical role in improving product quality, manufacturing consistency, and overall product reliability. The position helps ensure that products are built to current engineering specifications, reduces the risk of assembly errors and incorrect component usage, minimizes rework and scrap, and supports compliance with company quality standards. Through effective management and documentation control, this role contributes directly to the delivery of high-quality products that meet customer expectations and business objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

• Audit BOMs for accuracy and completeness.
• Create and process ECRs.
• Attend ECN approval meetings.
• Communicate approved ECN changes to affected departments.
• Document implementation dates and effective changes in AS400.
• Coordinate with Sourcing and Warehouse Outfitters to address material shortages.
• Research and evaluate substitute parts.
• Maintain accurate engineering records and revision history.

Engineering Team

• Review and approve engineering changes.
• Validate technical suitability of substitute components.

Sourcing Department

• Identify supplier shortages and lead-time concerns.
• Assist in locating alternative suppliers and materials.

Warehouse Outfitters

• Report inventory shortages.
• Provide production usage and inventory information.

Manufacturing

• Verify implementation of approved engineering changes.
• Confirm production readiness of substitute parts.

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum Degree Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Years of experience: 1 to 3 years

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:

• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and product documentation.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
• Understanding of Bill of Material (BOM) structures and product configuration management.
• Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

• Less than 10%

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Regularly walks, sits, stands, and works on a computer.

Occasionally lifts up to 50 lbs.

Additional Physical Requirements:

• Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
• Occasional travel throughout manufacturing and warehouse areas.
• Ability to communicate effectively with personnel at all levels of the organization.

INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT:

Performs tasks and duties under general supervision, using established procedures and innovation. Chooses from limited alternatives to resolve problems. Occasional independent judgment is required to complete work assignments. Often makes recommendations to work procedures, policies, and practices.
