Turn Your Passion for Fitness Into a Career That Inspires Healthy Living – Join Our Team as a Wellness Coordinator!

Position Summary

At the YMCA, wellness is about more than fitness. It's about helping people build confidence, reach their goals, and create healthier lifestyles. As a Wellness Coordinator, you'll play an important role in creating a welcoming, supportive environment where members of all fitness levels feel encouraged to succeed. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for someone who loves fitness and enjoys helping others. You'll spend approximately 80% of your time providing direct service while also supporting daily wellness operations, staff development, program growth, and member engagement.

What Success Looks Like

Successful Wellness Coordinators:

  • Create a welcoming wellness environment where members feel comfortable, supported, and motivated.
  • Build meaningful relationships that encourage members to stay engaged in their wellness journey.
  • Support safe, high-quality fitness experiences through equipment demonstrations and guidance.
  • Develop confident, knowledgeable team members who provide exceptional service.
  • Help grow wellness programs and increase member participation.
  • Keep daily operations running smoothly while maintaining a strong focus on safety.
  • Model YMCA values and create a culture of inclusion, teamwork, and healthy living.

What You'll Be Doing

Wellness Center Operations & Member Experience

  • Provide shift supervision while spending approximately 80% of your time delivering direct service to members.
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive wellness environment.
  • Demonstrate fitness equipment and explain proper use to members and guests.
  • Answer member questions and provide guidance that supports individual wellness goals.
  • Respond to member concerns and inquiries in a timely, professional, and solutions-focused manner.
  • Build positive relationships using the YMCA's Listen First approach.

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Assist with recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, and developing wellness team members.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and support to strengthen staff performance.
  • Participate in team member evaluations and corrective action processes when necessary.
  • Support staff scheduling and payroll processing.
  • Help build a positive team culture focused on accountability, collaboration, and excellent service.

Program Development & Community Engagement

  • Refer members to qualified medical professionals when questions or concerns involve injuries, medical conditions, or other health-related issues.
  • Refrain from prescribing diets or supplements or diagnosing or treating injuries and illnesses.
  • Follow YMCA policies, procedures, and safety expectations.

What You Should Know Before Applying

This is a hands-on leadership position, not a traditional desk-based coordinator role. Most of your time will be spent working directly with members, providing fitness guidance, supporting wellness center operations, and helping create a positive experience for everyone who visits.

You'll also balance staff supervision, scheduling, program development, and administrative responsibilities. Success requires someone who enjoys being actively involved in daily operations while helping others grow and succeed.

You May Be a Great Fit If You...

  • Have a genuine passion for fitness, wellness, and helping others lead healthier lives.
  • Enjoy connecting with people of all ages, abilities, and fitness levels.
  • Love sharing your knowledge and helping others feel confident using fitness equipment.
  • Are a natural motivator who enjoys encouraging both members and teammates.
  • Thrive in an active environment where you're constantly interacting with people.
  • Enjoy coaching others and helping build a strong, supportive team.
  • Can balance hands-on member service with leadership and administrative responsibilities.
  • Believe wellness should be welcoming, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone.

This Role May Not Be the Best Fit If You...

  • Prefer a primarily administrative or desk-based leadership position.
  • Are looking for a role focused exclusively on personal training or teaching fitness classes.
  • Prefer working independently with limited member interaction.
  • Are uncomfortable providing staff feedback or addressing performance concerns.
  • Prefer a highly predictable routine with minimal interruptions or changing priorities.
  • Are less interested in the scheduling, staffing, and operational responsibilities that come with a coordinator position.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of job related experience.
  • Knowledge of basic exercise science principles and safe fitness practices.
  • Ability to demonstrate and explain fitness equipment use effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals of different ages, backgrounds, abilities, and fitness levels.
  • Commitment to following YMCA policies, professional fitness guidelines, and safety standards.
  • Passion for supporting healthy living and advancing the YMCA's mission.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods, with occasional bending or stooping.
  • Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of alertness, concentration, and initiative.
  • Comfortable working in an active wellness environment with frequent member and staff interactions.
  • Ability to work in environments that may experience extreme heat during peak summer months.
  • Maintain a neat, professional appearance consistent with YMCA values.

Our Full-Time Benefits Include

  • Health care medical coverage
  • Dental and vision insurance
  • Employer-paid Long-Term Disability (LTD) and Life Insurance
  • Generous Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • 12% employer retirement contribution
  • Complimentary YMCA family membership
  • 50% discount on most YMCA programs
