This is a hybrid position that includes working from our Times Square office at least three days per week.
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is the philanthropic heart of Broadway, bringing together the theater community and its audiences to help people across the country receive lifesaving medications, healthcare, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency financial assistance.
Job Summary:
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is seeking a Web Designer who combines a strong visual design background with hands-on website experience. This role is approximately 50% design and 50% website production, maintenance and technical support. You are a trained designer with a strong eye for typography, layout, color and composition, demonstrated through your portfolio. You are also comfortable working behind the scenes of a WordPress website, making updates, working with basic code and troubleshooting routine website issues. Working closely with our Web Developer and graphic design team, you will design digital experiences, maintain and update our websites and provide first-line website support when the Web Developer is unavailable.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Design
Design responsive, standards-compliant Mailchimp email layouts based on project needs
Redesign and modernize existing Mailchimp templates to keep Broadway Cares' communications fresh, effective and on-brand
Translate creative and marketing requests into wireframes, design concepts and finished designs for new responsive WordPress pages
Design a new original WordPress theme to be built in-house in collaboration with the Web Developer
Apply responsive design and accessibility (WCAG) standards to create inclusive experiences
Maintain the design and visual consistency ofbroadwaycares.org anddradance.org
Optimize and process image and design files (GIF, JPG, PNG, PSD, AI, INDD, PDF) for web, email and social media, meeting file-size, dimension, color and quality standards
Prepare and deliver clean, organized, developer-ready design files and assets
Website Production & Support
Manage and maintain content across Broadway Cares' WordPress websites
Make routine website updates using the WordPress editor, HTML and CSS
Read and make basic edits to existing HTML and PHP code when needed
Troubleshoot routine WordPress issues, including formatting, functionality and plugin-related problems
Serve as first-line website support when the Web Developer is unavailable, escalating complex development or server issues
Help test WordPress core, theme and plugin updates and identify functionality issues
Test designs across desktop and mobile devices, email clients and web browsers, and help resolve rendering issues
Maintain a basic understanding of how websites, hosting and servers work in order to identify and communicate technical issues
Creative Team & Organizational Support
Support the in-house graphic designers and video editor across digital and print projects, including social media campaigns, event banners, posters, postcards, invitations, signage and program ads
Help catalog, organize and manage the organization's graphic, photographic and video assets
Work with the communications, development and production teams to meet marketing, promotional, media and event deadlines
Participate with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS staff in facilitating audience appeals on Broadway during two six-week fundraising periods each year, including evenings and weekends
Participate in fundraising events, some of which occur during evenings and weekends
The responsibilities listed above are not exhaustive and may evolve as the role develops. The individual in this position will also be expected to take on additional ad hoc tasks, responsibilities, and projects as assigned by the manager, adapting to the dynamic needs of the team and organization.

Required Skills/Abilities:
One to two years of professional web or digital design experience, preferably with an in-house creative team, agency or nonprofit organization, or as a full-time freelancer
A strong portfolio demonstrating web, email and digital design work, with a finely tuned eye for typography, layout, color and composition
Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, web image formats and web color standards, including optimizing assets for size and quality
Experience designing responsive emails in Mailchimp or a comparable platform
Solid understanding of responsive web design, mobile standards and web accessibility standards, including WCAG
Hands-on experience with WordPress, including content management, plugins and routine troubleshooting
Working knowledge of HTML and CSS; ability to read and make basic edits to PHP
Basic understanding of web hosting and servers, and ability to clearly communicate technical issues
Experience testing across browsers, devices and email clients
Ability to translate creative and marketing requests into wireframes, finished designs and clean, developer-ready files
Exceptional organizational, communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced creative environment
A comprehensive understanding of and commitment to Broadway Cares' mission
An affection for dogs
Preferred Skills
Familiarity with JavaScript and WordPress theme development
Experience designing content for social media
Familiarity with video editing, motion graphics or animation
Knowledge of printing and prepress procedures
Familiarity with digital asset management (DAM) systems

Compensation:
$70,000-$80,000
The salary range reflects the experience and responsibilities outlined in this job description. We welcome candidates with a range of backgrounds and experience levels.
