General Information/Job Summary
Underdirection, the pipefitter performsworkinvolved in theinstallation, maintenance, and repair of process facilities andsystems,high pressure steam pipes and fittings, pumps,boilers and furnaces, steam heatingauxiliaryequipment and steam operatedequipment;workswithvarious machine and hand tools common to the trade; may prepare orwork from sketches, plans, and specifications in accordwith accepted trade practices; may becalled on to do routinewelding; takes the leadover andgives suitableassignments to thoseassigned as helpers; does relatedwork asrequired.

Lay out, fabricate, assemble,install, and maintainpiping, pipingsystems, andequipment for steam, hotwater,cooling,lubricating, and industrial processingsystems. Applyknowledge ofsystem operation,building plans, andworkdrawings in performingtasks. Usuallyworkwithlarge pipes that are frequently secured by means of flanges (rim or collar) and/or welding.
Responsibilities/Competencies
- Uses basicknowledge ofregulations andrequirements. Determines methods and materials needed to accomplishassigned tasks.
- Prepares and/orworks from sketches, plans, specifications, and roughing-in sheets in accordwithapproved trade practices. Â Interpretsgraphicsymbols on pipingdrawings.
- Lays out, assembles,installs, and maintains pipesystems, pipe supports, and relatedhydraulic and pneumaticequipment for steam, hotwater,heating,cooling,lubricating,sprinkling, and industrial production and processingsystems,applyingknowledge ofsystem operation, andfollowingblueprints.
- Installs andrepairs pipingsystems using flanged,screwed, bell andspigot, compression,and soldered joints.
- Perform lockout and tag procedures to secure anddeactivateequipment, and checklocal points to ensure properlockout procedures are used.
- Inspectswork site to determine presence of obstructions and to ascertain that holes cut for pipewill not cause structuralweakness.
- Bends pipe, using pipe bending tools and pipe bending machine. Cuts pipe,usingsaws,pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, and pipe cutting machine. Threads pipe by hand or bypowerdriven equipment.
- Dismantlesequipment ordevices togain access to andremovedefective parts or components. Enters safevessels,towers, and columns forinstallation and maintenance oftrays andcleaning.
- Perform miscellaneous tasks thatrequire manuallymoving materials, tools, andequipment and using hand tools andpower tools.
- Performswork area clean-up and safety-related duties.
- Completespaperwork documenting repair and maintenanceactivities.Gives suitableassignments to helpers.
- Works in associationwith all crafts (electrician,welder, carpenter, orpainter)whenconditions, schedule, orworkloadwarrants or as directed by management.
- Secures pipes to structurewith brackets, clamps, and hangers, using hand tools andpower tools.
- Requiresworking in operating facilities andobserving and abiding byadditionalsafetypolicies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Four (4)years ofexperience inworkinvolving avariety oflayout,installation, and maintenance tasks
- Possessa validdrivers’ licensewith agooddrivingrecord.
