Vehicle Safety Operator

The Role

As aVehicle Safety Operator (VSO),  you will play a key role in testing and validating autonomous vehicle systems in live environments. Your primary responsibility is to ensure the safe operation of our AVs during on-road testing by actively monitoring system behavior and being ready to intervene if necessary.

This position requires high attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and clear communication with the engineering and operations teams. You’ll help bridge the gap between real-world driving conditions and advanced AI development.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely operate autonomous test vehicles on public roads and closed courses.

• Monitor vehicle system performance in real-time and take control when needed to ensure safety.

• Follow strict safety and operational protocols at all times.

• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report any issues promptly.

• Document system performance, unusual events, or software behavior during test runs.

• Collaborate with engineering and autonomy teams to provide detailed feedback and incident reports.

• Requires sitting and driving for prolonged periods.

• May involve working in varying weather and traffic conditions.

• Maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.
   

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid Japan driving licence with a clean driving record.

• 2+ years of driving experience.

• Strong situational awareness and sound judgment.

• Basic IT skills; comfortable using tablets, laptops, data entry tools, and vehicle software systems.

• Ability to focus for extended periods and remain calm under pressure.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in Japanese.

• Must be comfortable with shift work, including early mornings, nights, weekends, or holidays.

• Able to pass a background check and drug screening, if required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in a vehicle testing, autonomous vehicle, or transportation tech environment.

• Technical understanding of AV systems, vehicle mechanics, or software development tools.

• Familiarity with data collection practices and incident reporting.

• チームリーダーをはじめ、エンジニアチームや自動運転開発チームと協力し、詳細なフィードバックや問題点（インシデント）をレポート提供する。

• 長時間の運転・着座しての業務が求められる。

• 有効な日本の普通自動車運転免許を保有し、違反歴がないこと。

• 2年以上の運転経験。

• 基本的なITスキル（タブレット、ノートパソコン、データ入力ツール、車載ソフトウェア等の使用に対応可能であるもしくは慣れていること）。

• 長時間にわたり集中力を維持し、緊急時にも冷静に対応できる能力。

• 日本語での優れた口頭および書面によるコミュニケーションスキル。
