We are seeking an experienced Insurance Strategist for our Global Client Solutions team.  In coordination with the client solutions leads, the Insurance Strategist will develop a strategic sales plan for the insurance market initially in the U.S. followed by a global approach.  The candidate will work closely with our investment teams to design and develop product focused for the insurance space.

Along with serving as a liaison between client solutions and investments, the Insurance Strategist will join the client solutions leads in being responsible for serving, helping to retain and expand partnerships with our current insurance relationships. The candidate will partner with the Client Solutions regional leaders to help build relationships, deepen trust, and develop new business with Chief Investment Officers, Chief Financial Officers, Chief Risk Officers, and their staffs. This includes a focus on the design, communication, and delivery of a range of services, solutions/analytics and capabilities.  The Insurance Strategist will help set the strategic direction for engagements with Life, P&C, Health and multi-line insurers across our strategies. 

Team and Position Description

The Insurance Strategist partners with both investments and distribution to promote and drive the growth of our Insurance business. Key deliverables include:

  • Developing innovative portfolio solutions recommendations across our investment strategies to meet the needs of insurers.  Provide strategic asset allocation advice and market updates to clients and prospects
  • Providing portfolio, asset class, and security level optimization using regulatory capital, accounting, and economic capital models
  • Identifying product and platform focus areas for the client solutions team by providing key insights into the relative value and attractiveness of asset classes, providing periodic sales training, and helping to align our services with needs of global insurance companies
  • Providing expert support in client/prospect meetings to advance opportunities for single mandate and strategic partnerships
  • Detailed analysis of insurance companies and their peer set. Utilize insurance databases and work with the sales team to identify opportunities and develop target lists
  • Knowledge of asset class structuring and how to most efficiently structure insurance sensitive portfolios
  • Maintaining expertise in and providing updates on industry regulation which impacts our clients and our services
  • Building our brand with insurers globally through thought leadership, digital presence, and other promotional materials for papers, sponsored conferences, and events

Role Success Factors

As an external-facing member of our Global Client Solutions team, critical responsibilities include liaising between distribution and investments and serving as a markets, regulatory, and portfolio expert to our clients and prospects. The Insurance Strategist will also support the development/knowledge sharing, strategy development, and new product development. To support our growth goals in the Insurance space, success in the role will be tied to:

  • Engagements leading to growth in our insurance clients (breadth/number of clients, depth of services for each, growth of existing clients focused primarily on the general account space)
  • Development of new products and solutions for Insurance clients.
  • Brand building of Hamilton Lane as a leader in the Insurance private markets management space through development and communication of thought leadership, market commentary and recommendations, presentations at conferences and events, and positioning
  • Building Trust with internal clients, especially with Global client solutions teams, investments and client operations
  • Evaluating portfolios, analyzing constraints/accounting/regulatory/ALM impacts and developing and communicating solutions. This includes investment policy recommendations, customizing investment strategy, evaluating guidelines and monitoring investments
  • Proactive time management and focus on highest probability of success and value-added activities

Job Qualifications & Key Attributes of the ideal candidate:

  • Strong investment acumen, especially in Private Alternatives
  • Technical experience/fluency in portfolio management, risk management, or credit analysis. Experience analyzing and presenting insurance specific needs such as Risk Based Capital constraints, regulatory/NAIC frameworks, accounting/reporting requirements
  • Five or more years of successful Insurance related GA asset management or a role working directly or indirectly with insurers. Experience as an Insurance or in insurance client service or product marketing is a plus
  • Location in suburban Philadelphia headquarters is preferred but willing to entertain other locations and remote work options
  • Willingness to travel in North America and globally as required to meet internal and external client needs. 20-40% traveling globally, especially in the US.  
  • Bachelor’s degree.  MBA and/or CFA, FSA, CAIA, etc. is preferred.
