ABOUT KHAN LAB SCHOOL:

 

In 2012, Sal Khan wroteThe One World Schoolhouse, in which he outlines how modern education developed and how Khan Academy came to be. But, most importantly, the book outlines a vision for the future of both in-person and online education given the tools we have and the need for many more people to participate in the knowledge economy. In 2014, He founded Khan Lab School to test and refine these ideas in an actual school setting.

 

Today, Khan Lab School has grown to be a K-12 independent school on two campuses serving over 260 students in Silicon Valley. The Lower School (K-6) program is located in Palo Alto. California. The Upper School (7-12) is located in Mountain View, California.


ABOUT THE POSITION:


The Varsity Boys Basketball Coach (Grades 9-12) is responsible for leading and growing the basketball program at Khan Lab School. In addition to having a deep understanding of basketball, the coach should have a nuanced understanding of adolescent development and teaching practices in physical education.We are looking for a team player who has a sense of humor and a passion for working with high schoolers. This coaching position reports to the Director of Athletics & Outer Wellness.

 

SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Organize and run effective practices for the school’s Basketball Athletics Program.
  • Attend all games and practices while utilizing positive coaching techniques.
  • Communicate clear and consistent feedback to student-athletes, parents, and school administration.
  • Evaluate athlete performance and provide real-time instruction, balancing critique with positivity and motivation.
  • Model inclusion when welcoming new athletes to the team.
  • Act as a role model and leader at all times, gaining the respect and trust of the student-athletes, parents, and coaching colleagues.
  • Work with the Athletics Department to organize:
    • The scheduling of practices and games.
    • Transportation to sporting events, when needed.
    • The Basketball Program's short-term, long-term, and annual needs and development.
    • The sports equipment and uniform inventory and distribution.
  • Other related job duties, as needed.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, & EXPERIENCE INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

 

  • High school degree required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Previous basketball coaching experience in a middle and/or high school environment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the rules and regulations of basketball and an appreciation for the sport.
  • Prior experience playing basketball, and an understanding of how to teach others how to play and improve their technique.
  • Commitment to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community.
  • A passion for working with and engaging young athletes in learning experiences.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and be a team player.
  • Be reliable, punctual, and flexible.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications preferred.
  • Occasionally required to work weekends and nights for special events and basketball games, which are sometimes held outside and require the ability and willingness to work in all types of weather conditions at all times of the year.

 

PHYSICAL WORK REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:


  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull up to 40 pounds as some regular organizational tasks involve moving desks, electronics, and other school supplies and equipment, as needed.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position at least 50% of the time.
  • Capability of moving about inside an office setting to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Ability to proficiently and frequently operate a computer and keyboard as well as other office equipment such as calculators, copy machines, printers, and projectors.
  • Consistently practice safe working habits while using school supplies, equipment, and electronics as well as the ability to maintain a safe and hazard-free workstation for yourself and others at the school.
  • Occasionally required to work weekends, nights, or be on-call for events, which are sometimes held outside and require working in varying weather conditions at all times of the year.
  • Ability to properly communicate information and ideas so other people can understand as well as the ability to ascertain and understand information communicated from others.

POSITION DETAILS:

Number of Positions to be Filled: 1

Status: Part-time (up to 8 hours per week for approximately 15 weeks)

Pay: $30.00-34.00 per hour, depending on experience
