This is a hybrid industrial software engineering role that combines hands-on experience with SCADA and industrial data systems with strong modern software development skills.
The ideal candidate will have experience working with real-time plant-floor data using OPC, Kepware, tags, and historians while developing scalable, reliable, and maintainable web-based applications.
The engineer will leverage Ignition as the primary application platform, integrating real-time and historical data and extending Ignition Perspective using Python, JavaScript, CSS, SQL, and APIs to develop desktop and mobile manufacturing solutions.
This is also a highly customer-facing role that requires onsite visits to manufacturing facilities. The selected candidate will work independently with operators, maintenance personnel, engineers, supervisors, and management to understand manufacturing workflows, identify data requirements, and develop practical digital solutions.
Important: This is not primarily a PLC programming or traditional HMI configuration role. We are seeking an engineer who can bridge Operational Technology (OT), industrial data systems, modern application development, and manufacturing operations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Application Development
- Design, develop, and maintain responsive industrial web applications using Ignition Perspective and modern web technologies.
- Customize and extend Ignition's standard components using JavaScript, CSS, and Python scripting.
- Develop scalable, modular, and maintainable applications that support complex manufacturing requirements.
- Build intuitive desktop and mobile interfaces for manufacturing operations.
- Apply software development best practices to ensure code reusability, performance, and long-term maintainability.
- Connect manufacturing equipment and control systems to Ignition using OPC, Kepware, tags, and related industrial technologies.
- Configure, monitor, and troubleshoot real-time and historical industrial data collection.
- Integrate manufacturing applications with enterprise and industrial systems, including:
- SQL databases
- SAP
- SharePoint
- Active Directory
- OPC data sources
- Industrial historians such as Kepware and Canary
- REST APIs and web services
- Design efficient database structures, queries, and data models optimized for real-time manufacturing operations.
- Ensure reliable data communication between plant-floor systems and enterprise applications.
- Collaborate directly with manufacturing operators, trades, engineers, IT teams, supervisors, and managers.
- Conduct onsite assessments to understand equipment, processes, production workflows, and operational challenges.
- Identify required machine and process data and determine appropriate data acquisition methods.
- Translate business and manufacturing requirements into user-friendly applications, dashboards, and visualizations.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders from diverse technical and nontechnical backgrounds.
- Build strong customer relationships and professionally represent the engineering team and organization.
- Implement effective error handling, logging, troubleshooting, and diagnostic capabilities.
- Ensure applications meet performance, security, reliability, and compliance requirements.
- Develop and maintain clear technical documentation, system designs, and solution architecture diagrams.
- Support application testing, troubleshooting, optimization, and continuous improvement.
Software Development Skills
- Strong experience with web application development, including:
- HTML5
- CSS
- JavaScript
- Responsive web design
- Modern UI development patterns
- Proficiency in Python scripting for application development, business logic, and automation.
- Strong knowledge of SQL databases, relational data models, and query optimization.
- Experience integrating external applications through REST APIs or web services.
- Ability to design modular, scalable, and maintainable software applications rather than standalone screens.
- Hands-on experience with SCADA/HMI systems and live industrial data.
- Experience configuring, integrating, and troubleshooting OPC connections, tags, and industrial historian systems.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing equipment, industrial controls, production workflows, and real-time operational requirements.
- Experience with Ignition, Kepware, Canary, or comparable industrial technologies is strongly preferred.
- Ability to bridge industrial automation systems with modern software applications.
- Ability to work independently in active industrial manufacturing facilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working with operators, maintenance technicians, engineers, supervisors, and management.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities, professional judgment, and interpersonal maturity.
- Ability to understand loosely defined manufacturing challenges and translate them into practical digital solutions.
- Strong customer relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Willingness and availability to travel to customer manufacturing facilities as needed.
- Advanced hands-on experience with Ignition Perspective.
- Experience working in discrete manufacturing environments, including:
- Aerospace
- Automotive
- Shipbuilding
- Heavy industrial manufacturing
- Experience integrating manufacturing applications with SAP.
- Knowledge of cloud or hybrid architectures, including AWS Industrial Solutions Framework.
- Experience developing applications for complex industrial manufacturing environments.
