Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and proactive Systems Support Engineer to manage local data operations, server infrastructure, and logistics at our Chicago office. This role is ideal for a hands-on technologist who thrives in hybrid environments blending Linux systems administration, high-throughput data ingestion, hardware troubleshooting, and field logistics.
You will play a critical role in keeping our AV data collection vehicle fleet operational by physically retrieving data media from local sites, executing large-scale data ingests on our fiber connected rack, troubleshooting server hardware, and remotely monitoring infrastructure across multiple fleet locations in sync with engineering and operations teams.
Key Responsibilities
Data Ingestion & Local Transport:
Drive to local Chicago partner/operational sites multiple times per week to securely retrieve physical data drives and storage media.
Load and stage drive units into the Chicago office’s 100G ingest rack, initiate automated upload scripts, and verify successful data ingestion.
Systems Administration & Remote Monitoring:
Administer, maintain, and troubleshoot Linux-based servers, ingest racks, and network hardware on-site.
Perform remote system monitoring, health checks, and first-line troubleshooting for off-site fleet locations and edge infrastructure.
Serve as "smart hands" for remote engineering teams: executing debugging routines, gathering logs, swapping hardware components, and running test suites.
Logistics, Hardware, & Field Support:
Manage site shipping and receiving (FedEx, UPS, freight) for server components, field hardware, and return merchandise authorizations (RMAs).
Maintain accurate inventory logs of local data drives, server spare parts, and site assets.
Execute and refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for data handling, hardware maintenance, and operational escalation.
Skills & Qualifications
Experience: 2+ years of hands-on Linux systems administration or IT field support, with strong command-line proficiency (Bash, basic scripting, SSH, systemd).
Hardware & Data: Practical experience assembling, configuring, and troubleshooting server hardware, RAID arrays, network interfaces, and high-speed storage components.
Network & Monitoring: Familiarity with network fundamentals (TCP/IP, high-bandwidth interfaces like 100GbE, BMC/IPMI) and system monitoring tools.
Logistics & Organization: Demonstrated capability to manage physical inventory, handle secure data components, and execute carrier shipping (FedEx/UPS) processes.
Soft Skills: Ability to work independently with minimal daily supervision while maintaining strong communication with remote engineering teams.
Physical & Location Requirements:
Must be based in the greater Chicago area and able to report daily to the local office.
Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation for routine local trips to retrieve data hardware.
Ability to lift and move server equipment and drive enclosures weighing up to 50 lbs.
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Systems Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
