Faculty in this position will teach college-level American Sign Language (ASL) -English Interpreting skills within the established curriculum appropriately matched to the instructor’s experience and skills. Preference will be given to applicants who are memberswithin the deaf community for classes specific to deaf culture whereappropriate. The applicant must be fluent in ASL-English and up to date on best practices in the interpreting profession. Applicant must be aware of current pedagogy in the teaching of collegestudents, and will be responsible for the preparation and teaching of classes.Should be familiar with the values of Owens Community College.Â

Successful teaching in this learner-centered environment requires knowledge as well as the ability to design, implement, manage, and assess courses taught in a variety of instructional modes. Each faculty memberis required todemonstrate knowledge and skills in ASL-English Interpreting. In addition, applicant must be able to:Â

This position requires the individual to have native or near-native fluency in American Sign Language and strong skills in the following:Â

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skillsÂ

Essential Functions:Â
TEACHES CLASSES:Â
Develops a syllabus for the class using the assigned syllabus shell, including designing an evaluation procedure that falls within the parameters of the outline.Â
Prepares lesson plans and conducts classes during the scheduled times using the Department-approved test(s) or OER.Â
Follows Department guidelines for course content and best practices.Â
Meets classes on all scheduled dates and during the assigned semester.Â
Meets classes on time and holds classes for their fully allotted time.Â
If teaching online, respects the Owens Community College Standards for Web Instruction.Â
Usesappropriate classroom management techniques.Â
Usesappropriate means and methods of technology.Â
CREATES AND MAINTAINS ASSIGNMENTS, EVALUATIVE MEASURS, AND RECORDS:Â
Creates and evaluates assignments, evaluative measures, and activities appropriate to the class.Â
Assigns grades to student work.Â
Returns the graded assignments, evaluative measures, and activities to the students in a timely manner. Maintains the general guideline of returning student work and posting grades within a week.Â
Maintainsaccurate and thorough records of student attendance.Â
Reports student attendance as required by the published deadline.Â
Maintainsan accurate and thorough electronic gradebook.Â
At the end of the term, reports grades to the Records Office by the deadline andsubmits electronic copies of gradebook and attendance to the Department course management site.Â
Administers course evaluations as instructed by the College.Â
COMMUNICATES EFFECTIVELY:Â
Uses the College’s course management system for assigned courses and department matters asappropriate.Â
Uses MS Office Suite and/or other required (and Owens-system-compatible and approved) programs.Â
Submits electronic copies of all required documents (including syllabi, grade books, and attendance records, and other files asrequired) to the Departmental course management site.Â
Accesses Owens email account at least once a day to communicate adequately with students and with the Department Chair. Maintains the general guideline of reading and replying to all required messages within48 hours.Â
Responds to student inquiries outside of classin a timely manner.Â
Is available to meet additionally with students outside of class, if necessary.Â
ENGAGES IN OTHER DEPARTMENT-RELATED ACTIVITIES:Â
Attends Department and College workshops, training sessions, and development activities as needed.Â
Attends Department and Collegemeetings as necessary.Â
Participates in student learning assessment activities.Â
Performs other departmental duties, as assigned.Â

Minimum Education/Experience:Â
Master's degreeÂ
Master’s degree OR a member of the deaf community with at least 1 semester of experience in deaf studies.Â
One term of teaching experience preferred, including developing lesson plans and assessments.Â
Fluency in American Sign LanguageÂ
10 years of ASL-English Interpreting experience AND must be RID or BEI3 certifiedÂ
