Serve as the TRIO SSS Academic Advisor to a caseload of approximately 100-110 students who are members of the UW Oshkosh TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. The TRIO SSS program serves 300 UW Oshkosh students annually. SSS students are first-generation college (parents have not earned a baccalaureate degree) students and/or students whose family income meets federally established guidelines. Students with a documented disability may also be served in the program. The goal of SSS is to increase the college persistence and graduation rates of the students it serves. SSS is one of the U.S. Department of Education funded TRIO programs.
During the academic year, evening hours on a weekly basis may be required. Evening hours in the summer and weekend hours during both the academic year and summer on an occasional basis are required.
65% Provide support for an assigned caseload of student participants in the areas of academic advising, life skills development, student success development, career planning, financial literacy, and financial aid and scholarship assistance. Encourage students to participate fully in the college experience including study abroad, internship opportunities and consideration of graduate school.
1. Assist in the recruitment of eligible students and the completion of an intake process to include: an Interest Form, a Needs Sheet, and a First-Year Student Services Form.
2. Responsible for assessing a student participants’ needs by having students complete our program’s needs survey and developing an individualized student success plan at the beginning of a student participants enrollment into the program.
3. Responsible for the advisement of a caseload of about 100-110 student participants in assisting with academic planning, course selection, and navigating institutional and academic policies.
4. Facilitating semesterly advising meetings to help students set educational goals, monitor their progress, and provide resources for academic success.
5. Responsible for supporting student advisees who are on academic probation and/or suspension in creating an academic success plan with the goal of meeting the program’s retention, persistence, and graduation objectives.
6. Identify and make appropriate referrals to the Success Coach for at-risk students that might need additional support.
7. Monitor student progress employing developmental, proactive, and appreciative academic advising methods and document student advising meetings and interactions in Navigate and PeopleSoft in compliance of FERPA regulations.
8. Monitor and track student semester enrollment status, grades, grade-point averages, and progress towards graduation.
9. Provide monthly student progress reports to include academic issues and concerns (re-enrollment concerns, financial challenges and barriers; students dropping out, transferring out, or are at risk of being on academic probation and/or suspended).
10. Serves as a main point of contact for students and offers information about educational opportunities and academic requirements. Refer SSS students to other service providers on campus such as the Center for Academic Resources, Financial Aid, Registrar, Student Accounts, Counseling Center, Reading/Study Center, Disability Services, Project Success, etc.
11. Maintain accurate and detailed records of student contact. Keep student files up to date in accordance with federal and institutional regulations.
15% Assist in the development and implementation of project services under the direction of the program director and in collaboration with the other Student Support Services staff members.
1. Keep current with trends and knowledge in the fields of student success programs.
2. Employ best practices and success strategies in the design, implementation, and assessment of the SSS/SSS STEM program components.
3. In collaboration with SSS/SSS STEM First-Year Experience Coordinator, support the efforts of the SSS/SSS STEM First-Year Experience curriculum for first-year students. Advisors are responsible for discussing the importance of the TRIO SSS First-Year Experience program and addressing any attendance issues or concerns brought up by the FYE Coordinator and/or FYE student leaders.
4. In collaboration with the Success Coach, Advisors are expected to actively participate and engage in TRIO SSS workshops and events offered to program student participants. Advisors are responsible for encouraging all student advisees to actively participate in these workshops and events throughout the academic year, especially the End of Year Celebration event.
5. Provide support and guidance to student employees serving as First-Year Experience Student Leaders, Communication Intern, and/or Student Ambassadors.
10% Participate in New Student Orientations to assist with the recruitment of eligible students into the program and obtain documentation to verify program eligibility. Advocate for first-generation and limited-income students. Support the university's enrollment goals and assist with orientation by advising first-year students who may be eligible to participate in our TRIO SSS program.
5% Communicate and collaborate with the campus community. Serve on campus committees and participate in campus events and activities.
5% Perform other duties as assigned by the SSS/SSS STEM director.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
- Proactively engages students as needed
- Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
- Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
- Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
- Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
- Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures

Required Qualifications:
- Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor's degree
- Professional Experience working with educational programs
- Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, or a related field.
- Experience providing advising or counseling services in a professional capacity.
- Experience supporting the needs of first-generation, income eligible students.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with Student Support Services (SSS) and/or other TRIO programs.
