Job Title: Shovel Operator
Persons Interviewed: Oral Shumans/Derek Barnes
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Must be able to move timbers to an area that makes it accessible for the skidder operator.
- Must have good work ethics and willing to work with and assist co-workers.
- Must be aware of SMZ (stream management zones) areas.
- Must read and understand “Georgia’s Best Management Practices for Forestry” Manual.
Primary Duties:
- Must check engine oil, coolant, and hydraulic levels at the beginning of each shift.
- Must inspect equipment for leaks or damaged hydraulic lines before operating.
- Must adjust the tracks properly according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Must add wood to a mat, when necessary, so the skidder can traverse safely.
- Must shovel wood to a mat for the skidder operator to have easy access to the wood.
- Must shovel wood in wet areas, such as in narrow drains and where mats are not required, to higher ground for the skidder operator to access the wood without bogging.
Secondary Duties:
- Must wear appropriate PPE when necessary.
- Must not swing wood over the skidder or other machinery.
- Must complete all applicable maintenance videos
- Must complete all applicable safety videos.
Skills Needed to Perform Job:
- Previous experience is preferred; however, on-the-job training from an experienced shovel operator is an option.
