Chemical Technologist

If you do, CNL’s Environment and Waste Technologies Branch is seeking aChemical Technologistto support R&D projects involving waste processing, used‑fuel treatment, and the cleanup of radioactively and chemically contaminated waters and soils. What will you be doing! 

• Supporting Waste Processing Technologies Section research projects:
  • Assembling bench‑scale setups and experimental rigs.
  • Performing chemical sample analysis.
  • Organizing, documenting, and reporting experimental results.
• Completing routine laboratory operations (daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly):
  • Operating laboratory instruments, performing experiments, and recording, organizing, and compiling experimental data while maintaining excellent records and providing clear, accurate observations for technology development and commercial projects.
  • Calibrating laboratory equipment and supporting experiment quality assurance.
  • Following procedures to carry out work safely and accurately, including maintaining housekeeping standards and coordinating waste disposal.
• Setting up experimental and production facilities for R&D and commercial projects:
  • Setting up experimental facilities to support R&D and commercial activities.
  • Setting up production facilities for project execution.
  • Communicating effectively through clear oral and written communication.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.   
   

What we are looking for: 

• Education 
  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a field relevant to the position, such as Chemical Technology, Chemistry, Physics or Engineering, or equivalent formal education plus relevant experience.OR
  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent, and more than 3 years pertinent experienceor the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
• Experience 
  • Experience in chemical laboratory practices and safety procedures.
  • Some chemical engineering laboratory operational experience.
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to use basic computer applications, including word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Skilled in assembling and working with bench‑scale experimental setups and test rigs.
  • Demonstrated technical writing skills, with the ability to prepare clear and accurate documentation, reports, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn under supervision and contribute to experimental design and procedure development.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical and experimental issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment to ensure safety in laboratory environments.
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions and recommendations based on scientific principles, simulations, experimental results, and observations.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively articulate, justify, and influence others regarding technical decisions and recommendations.
  • Working knowledge of quality assurance (QA) requirements related to research and development activities.
  • Working knowledge of chemical laboratory practices, safety procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Working knowledge of chemical analysis techniques and related laboratory instrumentation.
• Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which hasa minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”  
     

Working Conditions:  

• Working schedule: Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hour work week. 
• This position is part of the USW 1568 UNIONand is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in their Collective Agreement. As a member of this bargaining unit, you’ll benefit from clear expectations around hours of work, wages, vacation, and other conditions that support a fair and consistent working environment.
• Office computer work, laboratory chemistry experiments, and engineering development work. 
• May require heavy lifting when handling engineering scale equipment and materials.
