Job Summary
The Trade Compliance Analyst – Export Control will support client’s International Shipping (EIS) by reviewing and validating US export-control classifications for products listed. This role involves researching the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and Commerce Control List (CCL) to determine appropriate Export Control Classification Numbers (ECCNs) or confirm whether products qualify as EAR99.
The ideal candidate will have foundational knowledge of US export controls, strong research and analytical skills, and the ability to make accurate, well-supported classification decisions. The analyst will document findings, follow established procedures, identify potentially controlled items, and escalate complex or ambiguous cases to ensure consistent export-compliance practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and validate export-control classifications for products supported by Client’s International Shipping (EIS).
- Research the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and Commerce Control List (CCL) to determine appropriate ECCN classifications and EAR99 treatment.
- Evaluate product descriptions, technical specifications, manufacturer information, images, and other available documentation to support classification decisions.
- Identify items that may fall under a controlled ECCN and distinguish them from products appropriately classified as EAR99.
- Document classification decisions, supporting rationale, and relevant research in accordance with established procedures.
- Escalate complex, ambiguous, or technically sensitive classifications that require additional expertise or review.
- Support regular audits and ensure alignment with internal trade-compliance processes and procedures.
- Collaborate with Operations Compliance and cross-functional partners to resolve classification questions and strengthen export-control practices.
- Manage recurring classification workloads while maintaining accuracy, consistency, and timely completion.
- Foundational knowledge of US export controls and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) or International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
- Working knowledge of the Commerce Control List (CCL) and Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) structure.
- Understanding of ECCN classification principles and when an item may appropriately be classified as EAR99.
- Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to make well-supported decisions using available information.
- Strong written communication and documentation skills.
- Ability to manage recurring workloads while maintaining accuracy and consistency.
- Direct experience with ECCN classification, CCL research, or EAR99 determinations.
- Familiarity with technical product specifications and manufacturer documentation.
- Knowledge of HS/HTS tariff classification and the distinction between tariff classification and export-control classification.
- Experience in ecommerce, international logistics, marketplaces, freight forwarding, customs brokerage, or supply chain operations.
- 1–3 years of experience in trade compliance, export controls, product classification, customs, logistics compliance, supply chain, or a related field.
- Relevant internship experience or comparable early-career experience may be considered.
- Practical exposure to export-control classification research and documentation.
- Ability to recognize when additional review or escalation is required.
Success in this role means making accurate, timely, and well-supported export classification decisions; consistently applying the EAR and CCL; maintaining clear and complete documentation; recognizing cases that require escalation; and contributing to a strong, scalable export-compliance program for International Shipping.
