NatCarbon Africa seeks a Tractor Driver in the Operations Department for the large-scale Spekboom Restoration Project in the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa.

With our partner, Imperative Global, our aim is to restore up to 100,000 hectares of degraded subtropical thicket biome. The Project entails planting Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) on privately owned land to improve ecosystem functioning and agricultural productivity over time, promote biodiversity, improve soil filtration, enhance water storage capabilities, and to reduce soil erosion. The Project is estimated to permanently store large quantities of Carbon Dioxide over the Project life, thus positively contributing towards climate change mitigation.

Position Summary:

We are looking for a skilled tractor driver to operate and maintain our fleet of tractors and trailers. The ideal candidate will have experience driving a variety of equipment. They should be familiar with government regulations governing the operation of commercial vehicles (tractors) and have a clean driving record. Minimum requirement will be a code 14 drivers license- Code EC or higher and 3 years experience in not only driving a tractor but driving a tractor and trailer configuration. Valid tractor operator certificate.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Reporting directly to the Project Extension Officer.
• Operate tractors and trailers to transport goods to designated locations.
• Inspect vehicles (tractors) before and after to ensure they are in good working condition, including oil check, tyre pressure, hydraulic oil and fuel.
• Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption and other data.
• Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures to ensure the safety of themselves and others on the road.
• Communication is key with your contractor teams.
• Report any mechanical issues or accidents to your superior.
• Ensure safe hitching of trailers to tractor and transporting to field.
• Ensure tractor and trailers are maintained in a clean and roadworthy condition.
• Keep record of crates transported and loaded.
• Will be required to camp out on various harvesting sites.

• The driver is required to do additional tasks- this includes, but is not limited to the following:
• Stacking, packing, unpacking, and loading crates.
• Watering of plants and management of plant depo as required.
• Manual labour as required.
• Fixing of equipment as required.
• Assisting personnel with measurements, block marking, litter collection.
• Assisting with a variety of tasks as required in the daily operations.
• Assist with driving any other vehicle as required. This can include taking Quality Controllers to site and dropping at various locations as required.
• The driver is responsible for managing all loads placed on or removed from the vehicle and must actively assist with loading, offloading, and any related manual labour. As a fully functional team member, the driver is expected to participate in all required physical work and may not remain seated in the vehicle while loading or offloading takes place.

• Frequent travel within the Eastern and Western cape anticipated, including to remote locations. Travel may on occasion cross weekends and holidays to accommodate schedules. Work hours may be irregular.

Qualifications

• High School Certificate.
• A valid driver’s license Code 14, minimum requirement of EC License.
• At least 3 years of experience driving a tractor and trailer.
• Able to communicate in English and Afrikaans.
• Knowledge of operating farming equipment, machinery and tools.
• Valid tractor operator certificate.
• PDP
• At least 3 contactable references.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Previous tractor and trailer experience in 4x4 and other poor road conditions.
Load and unload cargo using appropriate equipment and techniques. Experience of driving tractors and trailers with heavy loads.

POSITION LOCATION

Primarily based in Jansenville or surrounding areas close to the project area, willing to move within the Eastern Cape. Regular sleepout on camping sites are required.
