Build your clinical cardiology career in an academic health environment, alongside your research or fellowship.
Macquarie University Health is looking for an early-career General Cardiologist to join the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Program. This is a part-time, fixed-term role at 0.1 FTE for 12 months, starting February 2027. You will work one half-day a week in the WISE Emergency rapid access Cardiology outpatient clinic. There you will assess patients referred from the emergency setting, supervise and report cardiac investigations, and work closely with WISE Emergency physicians on patient care, including admission to Macquarie University Hospital when it's needed.
The role is well suited to cardiologists who are doing a PhD or a clinical or research fellowship, at Macquarie or elsewhere. It lets you keep up regular clinical practice while you pursue your academic training. You will be part of an academic cardiology department that covers both outpatient and inpatient care, working with clinicians, researchers and educators who use clinical care, teaching and discovery to inform one another every day.
About the Role
As a Specialist Clinician – Cardiologist, you will provide a rapid access outpatient cardiology service within your approved scope of practice. You will keep a high standard of professional performance and contribute to education, research and continuous quality improvement. This is a 0.1 FTE fixed-term appointment for one year from February 2027, made up of a weekly half-day session plus a low-burden on-call commitment. Clinic space and practice coordination will be arranged for you, and you will be supported by a multidisciplinary team committed to patient-centred, evidence-based care.
• Provide timely generalist cardiology assessment and management for patients referred to the WISE Emergency rapid access Cardiology outpatient clinic, within your granted scope of practice.
• Supervise and report cardiac investigations, including ECG, echocardiography, Holter monitoring, stress ECG and stress echocardiography.
• Give specialist advice to WISE Emergency physicians on patient management, and arrange admission to Macquarie University Hospital where appropriate.
• Take part in a low-burden cardiology on-call roster at Macquarie University Hospital. During your on-call weeks you will provide inpatient cardiology consults, supported by cardiology registrars and junior medical officers (JMOs).
• Work collaboratively with nursing, allied health, cardiac physiology/sonography staff and the wider care team.
• Keep accurate electronic medical record documentation, and communicate in a timely and respectful way with patients, families, carers and general practitioners to support safe continuity of care.
• Contribute to Cardiology multidisciplinary team meetings, clinical governance and quality activities, including peer review, audit, morbidity and mortality meetings, complaint reviews, and compliance with the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards.
• We strongly encourage involvement in teaching, supervising students on clinical placement, and clinical research. Depending on your skills, experience and interests, we can explore a formal or honorary appointment with the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences.

About You
• Registration as a medical practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Cardiology, or an equivalent recognised qualification, with eligibility for credentialing and a granted scope of practice at Macquarie University Hospital.
• Early post-fellowship experience in general cardiology, including the assessment and management of patients referred from emergency or acute care settings.
• Demonstrated competence in supervising and reporting cardiac investigations, including ECG, echocardiography, Holter monitoring, stress ECG and stress echocardiography.
• Current or planned PhD, or clinical or research fellowship, at Macquarie University or elsewhere, with the capacity to maintain regular clinical practice alongside academic training.
• Effective communication, documentation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with medical, nursing, allied health and cardiac diagnostic colleagues, and to liaise clearly with patients, families, carers and general practitioners.
• Commitment to clinical governance, quality improvement and patient safety, including peer review, audit and the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards, together with an interest in teaching, student supervision and clinical research.
