Duration: Potential FTE role, 13 Weeks Contract-to-Hire (CTH)
Pay Rate: $18.99/hr. on W2
Work Arrangement:100% Onsite (No Remote Option)
 
Job Description:ThePBX Operator Telecom serves as the primary communication hub for USC Keck Medicine, USC Norris Cancer Hospital, and USC academic medical centers.
The role is responsible for:
  • Answering and directing high-volume inbound calls (75+ calls/day)
  • Managing after-hours provider calls
  • Handling hospital paging and emergency communication codes
  • Routing calls and messages to appropriate medical personnel
  • Sending communications through phone, paging, text, email, and messaging systems
  • Responding to general inquiries and escalating clinical questions appropriately
This is a highly customer-facing role requiring exceptional verbal communication and professional phone etiquette.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Answer, screen, and direct inbound and outbound telephone calls
  • Operate call management and communication systems
  • Process electronic messages and web-based communications
  • Manage hospital paging requests and emergency notifications
  • Contact providers and medical personnel using various communication tools
  • Accurately document and relay messages
  • Maintain professionalism when assisting patients, providers, and staff
  • Handle high call volumes while maintaining service quality
Required Skills & Experience
Must Have
  • Customer service and/or call center experience
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Active listening and professional phone etiquette
  • Ability to manage multiple systems/screens simultaneously
  • Experience handling high-volume calls
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
  • Ability to remain calm while assisting upset or difficult callers
Preferred
  • Experience using:
    • EMR (Electronic Medical Record) systems
    • AMS messaging systems
    • Healthcare communication platforms
  • Healthcare, hospital, or medical office experience
Work Schedule & Shift Requirements
Important Scheduling Requirement
Candidatesmust be available to work any shift, including:
  • Sunday through Saturday
  • Day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts
  • Rotating schedules
  • 24/7 operational coverage
This is a critical requirement and should be thoroughly discussed with candidates before submission.
Training Schedule
Week 1 Systems Training
  • Monday-Friday
  • 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Typical Shift Hours
Shift start times may vary between:
  • 7:00 AM and 11:00 PM
Most common schedules:
  • 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
  • 11:00 AM - 7:30 PM
Weekend employees receive two days off during the week.
