Key Job Responsibilities:
The tankerman is the primary figure for loading & offloading barges for the company. The tankerman will perform the duties of a licensed tankerman to the best of their ability and within the requirements of local, state & federal regulations. The tankermen will conduct themselves in a professional manner while performing their duties. The tankerman is under the supervision of the field supervisor. Â
- Responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of loading and discharging barges in his assigned area.
- Required to be available twenty-four hours while on call and be able to drive to and from assigned jobs.
- Must be capable of lifting or moving objects (hoses, fittings, etc.) that may weigh in excess of 70 pounds. When an object is too heavy or awkward for one person to move safely, it is the responsibility of the tankerman to obtain assistance as necessary.Â
- May be required to ascend and descend portable ladders and/or fixed stairs in the safest manner possible.
- Must have reading skills that enable him to understand machinery operating manuals, emergency response procedures, U.S. Coast Guard regulations and other pertinent information. Must possess writing skills that allow him to complete logs, records and timesheets in a clear and legible manner.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with dock personnel.
- Must possess color vision sufficient to recognize color-coded objects such as electrical components, navigation lights, hazardous cargo placards, dock warning signals, pipes and valves.
- Must be capable of hearing alarms, unusual noises in operating machinery, and signals from boat or dock personnel by radio, telephone, or voice communicator.Â
- Must wear safety equipment as required and ensure safe working conditions and good housekeeping of the vessel.
- Ability to work outside in environmental conditions which can include extreme heat and cold.
1. The tankerman must work with little to no supervision on-call and under adverse conditions. The tankerman must abide by facility, customer & company policies and procedures.
- Must be reliable, conscience and capable of performing multiple duties in diverse conditions while being observed by the facility and or customer.
- Be familiar with procedures, policies, regulations and guidelines applicable not only to governmental rules but to AccuTrans customers and adhere to those rules.
- Must have the physical stamina to lift, carry, pull, and tug on hoses, mooring lines, valves, equipment and other devices in order to complete the task & still have the foresight to recognize when assistance is needed.
- Work in a solitary position while still working and promoting a team environment.
- Represent themselves & AccuTrans in a professional manner to both our internal & external customer while on the job.
- Distinguish the difference in essential and nonessential information and prioritize that information.
2. Understand the customer needs by keeping informed thereby knowing the current relationship as well as the history of the relationship and a general understanding of how these affect not only the employee but the Company.
3. Must periodically review and understand machinery operating manuals, emergency response procedures, U.S. Coast Guard regulations, Company policies, customer requirements, and other pertinent information. Must remain current on ever changing customer requirements, policies, and procedures by reviewing notices posted to the employee portal. Must complete log books, lessons learned reporting and job safety analysis, records and timesheets in a clear and legible manner.
Safety
First & foremost, the tankerman will ensure their work practices are conducted in a safe manner. Their safe actions should also include the safety of their co-workers and the environment. Â
- Perform job hazard analysis along with a barge inspection report per job.
- Ensure applicable safety procedures, policies and guidelines are being followed.
- Attend safety meetings to learn about recent issues or incidents so the information can be utilized on the job.
- Participate or suggest corrective actions whether attending safety meetings or while on the job so as to prevent or aid all participants involved.
- Ensure feedback to field employees who request, suggest or point out changes, unsafe conditions, acts, etc. whether on customer equipment or in a facility in which AccuTrans works in a timely manner.
Training
1. Leading by example will set the tone in which all field employees should practice. Experienced Tankerman may be called upon to train a new employee or step up as team leader when required. Training duties will consist of but not limited to the following:
- Provide assistance to field employee on company, facility and customer policies, procedures and guidelines.Â
- While assessing or assisting the field employee, be informative as possible and in a manner in which the information is easily understood. The field employee should be comfortable in asking questions without reprimand.
- Ensure the trainer uses proper safety, policy and procedure guidelines when training newly hired or newly licensed field employees or non-licensed field employees.
- Ensure the field employee performs his duties in a positive, safe and correct manner by means of positive reinforcement.
2. When performing light barge maintenance, delivering hoses, equipment, supplies, PPE etc. whether to employees or on customer equipment, document any supplies or equipment used for the purpose of proper accounting.Â
3. Provide support to the Operations Manager in other areas as appropriate.
4. On occasion provide assistance to the Quest Department. This will include but not limited to. Creating training folders and spreadsheets, helping with DL class, procedure revision, procedure test creation, customer training and any other admin duties.Â
5. Assist the customer in ways conducive to a smooth and productive operation.
6. Report any rumor or rhetoric detrimental to the company, employee etc. to the Operations Manager or VP.Â
7. Cross-train in Dispatch when needed.

Qualifications
Special Education, Training, Degree or License Required:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Possess a valid and current Driver’s license
- Possess a valid and current US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner’s Document, Tankerman (PIC)
- Ability to pass a pre-employment physical, benzene physical, DOT Drug and Alcohol screen, and respirator fit test
