Summary

We're looking for someone who loves digging into data until it gives up what it knows: you'll be the analytical core of the team that tests our camera and sensing systems in the physical world, turning large volumes of measurements into the answers module, optics, algorithm and system teams use to make decisions.

Description

Every camera and sensing system we ship is used, every day, by hundreds of millions of people who simply expect it to work. Ensuring our systems are worthy of that expectation is this team's goal. We challenge products through the physical world to prove it, and to feed real-world evidence back into system design โ€” measuring and analysing the performance of multi-disciplinary optical sensing systems. This role is the analytical core of that work. You will define what we measure and why, mine large volumes of measurement data for the effect that actually matters, and take a question that has never been answered to a defensible answer. It is highly collaborative: you will work directly with module, optics, algorithm and system teams, and your conclusions will be the basis of their decisions. You will work alongside our lead system engineer as a peer, with problems allocated between you according to where the issue actually sits. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys digging into data until it gives up what it knows, and who wants to take that on with us.

Responsibilities

  • Own the characterization of system performance end to end โ€” from risk and failure mode mapping through methodology definition, execution, analysis and reporting
  • Define metrics, testing & measurement methodology
  • Mine large data sets to separate isolate performance root causes
  • Correlate physical measurement to human perception โ€” where the HW meets the user
  • Build the analysis capability the work requires โ€” pipelines, tooling methods
  • Present and defend findings to module, optics, algorithm and system teams

Minimum Qualifications

  • MSc in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related field, with at least 3 years of hands-on experimental and analytical experience
  • Strong data analysis and visualization โ€” digest empirical data in a way that answers the question, and explain why that is the right way to look at it
  • Experience designing experiments to isolate a single effect, with the statistical judgment to assess sample size, repeatability and measurement error
  • Detailed understanding of optical sensing and imaging systems: image sensors, illumination sources, optical elements, and the tolerances that govern them
  • Great interpersonal skills โ€” working collaboratively with peers and colleagues across the organization

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field (Optics, Physics, EE) or equivalent
  • Background in image quality assessment and associated metrics
  • Background in depth sensing, calibration, or autofocus systems
  • Experience with large-scale data handling, automated analysis pipelines, or applying AI tooling to engineering analysis
  • Hands-on lab experience with optical setups and electrical equipment
  • Experience in the consumer electronics industry and with vendors
  • Experience defining and tracking requirements and specifications from system level through sub-modules and components
