JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/ Objective
East Side House (ESH) is a community resource in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families, and their community. ESH’s Community School Program aligns with our mission by providing high quality programs and services within community centers and school partnerships.
Reporting to the Community School Director, the Student Advisor is responsible to the intellectual and emotional growth of every student through the creation of a nurturing and supportive learning environment. By mobilizing the resources of parents, the community, business and cultural entities and the professional staff, our school community is dedicated to a single purpose- maximizing pupil potential. The Student Advisor will support attendance improvement for the Community School Program, develops relationships with students and families feel support, community members, feel connected, and emerge in successful outcomes. Coordinated resources and programs must address key priorities such as attendance, academic; socio-emotional, health and others. Programmatically, resources may be designed to include options before, during after-school, during the school year, and summer months.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Community School Director, the Student Advisor, will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
- Meet with targeted students remotely in a group setting and individually to assist them in their attendance, academic, and personal goals
- Conduct daily attendance outreach via phone, remotely, or socially distant as needed
- Consult with teachers remotely via phone, email or virtual platform
- Maintain student charts and records to ensure individual and programmatic milestones are being met.
- Refer students to additional support services as needed. Ensure services can be provided remotely
- Participate in civic and community building efforts and activities as assigned via East Side House Community Development.
- Identify and establish linkages with community organizations to identify additional resources and supports for students and families.
- Arrange virtual and remote field trips, special events and extracurricular activities.
- Build strong, positive relationships with school leadership, teachers and administrative staff members
- Educating students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing; advising students and families as they go through the process; and helping students and families aspire realistically and choose wisely
- Attend all necessary administrative meetings, program trainings and staff development. Meetings may require virtual attendance.
- Participate in special yearly student-based projects.
- Meet with each student on caseload remotely to create a needs-based assessment and set academic, attendance and behavioral goals as needed for each student.

Qualifications
To perform this position successfully, the Student Advisor must be able to fulfill all the elements of the job description to the highest standard and be able to work well with colleagues in a high energy and collaborative work environment. Additional qualifications include:
Education / Experience
- B.A/ B.S.W. with at least two years’ experience with youth-related work.
- Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively with school aged youth, educators, families and communities from a wide range of cultural, social and economic backgrounds.
- Experience working in school-based settings (Middle, and /or High School), with knowledge about tenants of community organizing, student support services, and youth development theories.
- Ability to work collaboratively, with strong relationship building skills.
- Knowledge and experience in WordPerfect/ Microsoft Word and other applications.
- Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
- Some nights and weekends.

Employees must be clear to work at ESH. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings.
Supervisory Responsibility

This position is responsible for supervising and managing the performance of all designated employees assigned to the position within the department.
Physical Demands
This role may involve occasional lifting or moving of items up to 25 pounds and routine use of standard office equipment. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Expected Work Schedule
The work schedule expected for this position is: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-3:30pm/8am-4pm with occasional late evenings and Saturdays, as aligned to the needs of the program/ service. The schedule may be adjusted based on ESH’s operational needs, with notice provided whenever possible.
Work Environment
The position is in a school-based environment. The dress code is business casual. This job operates in a professional school environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Travel
Minimal travel is expected for this position. Travel throughout the NYC boroughs is expected for this position (on an as needed basis).
