What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a Structural Steel Detailing Lead to support the design and delivery of critical infrastructure projects, including industrial, manufacturing, data center, semiconductor, and other high-tech facilities. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in structural steel detailing, connection design, and fabrication-ready deliverables, along with the ability to lead a detailing team while remaining hands-on with production work.This role is a working lead who will guide the steel detailing effort on complex projects, develop standards, mentor detailers, to produce high-quality shop drawings and model-based deliverables. Responsibilities span all project phases from early coordination and preliminary detailing through issue-for-fabrication and shop support, while ensuring full alignment with project-specific requirements and coordinating directly with structural engineers and fabrication partners.
What You’ll Do
- Lead steel detailing efforts for new and renovation projects across industrial, manufacturing, data center, semiconductor, and other high-tech facilities
- Produce accurate LOD 400 fabrication drawings, review, connection details, erection drawings, and BIM/model-based deliverables
- Perform and oversee advanced steel connection design and detailing, including complex moment connections, braced frames, trusses, heavy industrial supports, and vibration-sensitive equipment platforms
- Establish and enforce detailing standards, modeling protocols, and quality procedures for high-tech and fast-track projects
- Provide day-to-day leadership and mentorship to the steel detailing team—assigning work, reviewing output, developing junior detailers, and maintaining schedule accountability
- Support project delivery from concept through construction, including early quantity/constructability input, shop drawing coordination, and fabricator/erector RFI responses
- Conduct QA/QC reviews of steel detailing deliverables and collaborate with structural engineers on design intent, advanced analysis (including FEM), and constructability optimizations to ensure constructible, economical, and code-compliant results
What You’ll Bring
- Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering, Drafting/Design Technology, or equivalent practical experience in structural steel detailing
- Minimum 5 years of progressive structural steel detailing experience for high-tech, industrial, commercial, or manufacturing facilities, with at least 1 year in a lead or supervisory capacity
- Proven ability to lead and mentor a detailing team while maintaining an individual contributor role for high-volume shop drawings and model content
- Expert-level proficiency with steel detailing and BIM tools (e.g., SDS/2, Tekla Structures, Advance Steel, or equivalent) plus strong experience with Revit Structural, Navisworks/Revizto
- Solid understanding of AISC standards, RCSC specifications, AWS welding codes, and relevant US building codes (IBC, ASCE 7, AISC 360)
- Experience detailing complex steel structures typical of semiconductor, data center, or advanced manufacturing environments (long-span systems, equipment supports, vibration isolation frames, pipe rack interfaces, etc.)
- Self-directed, highly motivated working lead with excellent communication skills; flexible multitasker able to balance hands-on production, team leadership, and cross-functional coordination while adapting to rapidly changing requirements in a fast-paced environment and upholding quality standards
