JOB SUMMARY
The Steward plays a vital role in maintaining cleanliness, organization, and sanitation throughout the kitchen and food preparation areas. This position ensures that all kitchen equipment, utensils, dishes, and service ware are properly cleaned, sanitized, stored, and ready for use, supporting the culinary and service teams. The ideal candidate is a hardworking, reliable team player who thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. This role is critical to maintaining the luxury standards and reputation of The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa while upholding all health, safety, and sanitation requirements.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, and organized kitchen and food preparation environment.
- Wash, sanitize, and properly store dishes, pots, pans, utensils, glassware, and food service items.
- Operate dishwashing equipment safely and efficiently.
- Maintain cleanliness of kitchen floors, walls, equipment, storage areas, and stewarding workstations.
- Replenish cleaning and sanitation supplies as needed.
- Remove trash, recyclables, and waste materials and dispose of them in designated areas.
- Assist with receiving, storing, and transporting supplies and products as assigned.
- Ensure all work areas comply with sanitation, food safety, and health department standards.
- Support culinary and food & beverage operations through general cleaning and stewarding duties.
- Follow all safety procedures when handling cleaning chemicals and equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous stewarding, janitorial, housekeeping, kitchen utility, or food service support experience preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team.
- Professional appearance and behavior.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and maintain productivity during busy periods.
- Must perform all duties and responsibilities in a safe manner.
- Must be available to work a varied schedule, including weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Scheduled days and hours will vary based on departmental needs.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
- No certifications required.
- Food Handler Certification preferred or must be obtained within the timeframe established by the company.

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to meet the following minimum physical requirements for at least an eight-hour shift:
Physical Stamina
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment with moderate to high noise levels.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures, including hot, cold, and humid conditions.
- Ability to work safely on potentially wet or slippery surfaces.
Hearing / Speech
- Must be able to communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers regarding tasks, safety concerns, and operational needs.
Vision
- Must be able to read labels, safety instructions, cleaning guidelines, and work assignments.
- Must be able to identify cleanliness and sanitation concerns in the work environment.
Literacy
- Must be able to read and understand safety procedures, SDS documentation, cleaning instructions, and work assignments.
Chemicals / Agents
- Must be able to safely handle cleaning chemicals and sanitizing agents in accordance with SDS requirements and all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.
