Tesla was founded in 2003 with the goal of accelerating the transition to sustainable energy and protecting the planet Earth. Through solar energy, batteries, and electric vehicles, we are building a world of amazing abundance.

At Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, we manufacture the Model Y, and starting in 2027, we’ll produce everything from battery cells to electric vehicles. This is unique in Europe. Our international team consists of over 12,000 employees from 130 countries. We hire talent at all skill levels - prior experience in the automotive industry is not required. Would you like to help write the next chapter in Tesla’s success story and work at one of Germany’s most modern workplaces? Then this is the right place for you!

We are currently recruiting for a Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineering team. This role comes with the responsibility to design innovative, state of the art, cost and energy efficient design solutions for the different systems mentioned in the responsibilities below.

  • Deliver LPH2 to LPH5 designs, coordinating across disciplines while ensuring compliance with local norms and Tesla standards.
  • Explore efficient utility solutions for state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment.
  • Coordinate with engineers and delegate tasks to junior team members and modelers for HVAC and plumbing trades.
  • Provide technical guidance and recommendations to junior engineers in specialized areas.
  • Review designs from external consultants and modelers for accuracy and feasibility.
  • Conduct technical discussions with suppliers and support procurement negotiations to secure optimal prices and lead times.
  • Schedule deliverables to align with new project production timelines.
  • Examine shop drawings and contractor submittals for compliance.
  • Generate construction drawings in Revit and AutoCAD, adhering to VDI 6026 LPH 5 standards.
  • Prepare basis of designs, hydraulic/static/thermal load calculations, schematics, BOQs, equipment schedules, and sequence of operations.
  • Liaise with design management, procurement, construction, quality control, commissioning, facility management, EHS, permitting, project controls, and interdisciplinary functions.
  • Assess manufacturing requirements and recommend enhancements for reliable equipment operation.
  • Take ownership of designs within your scope, ensuring constructability, functionality, and maintainability for downstream implementation.
  • Spot innovation opportunities for operational improvements and OPEX reductions; develop business cases with ROI analysis, data-backed cost estimates, and adherence to local/international codes.

What You’ll Bring

  • Master's degree in engineering or equivalent German Diplom Ingenieur.
  • Proven experience in general/lab ventilation, dust collection, VOC abatement, smoke exhaust, dry air, clean rooms, pressurization, process heating/chilled/condenser water, domestic potable/hot/industrial water, sewage/condensate, vacuum drainage, and rainwater networks, with emphasis on systems outlined in responsibilities.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk products and familiarity with the ACC ecosystem.
  • At least 15 years in designing the aforementioned trades, including medium to large-scale industrial projects.
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in German is advantageous.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate in flexible, agile team environments.
  • Capacity to thrive in fast-paced settings, manage multiple scopes, and coordinate tasks across teams to expedite projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering design principles, guidelines, and standards in the discipline, including German regulations such as DIN, VDI, and AWSV.
  • Expertise in thermal calculation software like HAP or equivalents, hydraulic calculations using Pipeflo or similar tools, advanced proficiency in Revit, Navisworks, and AutoCAD, as well as MS Office and project management platforms like Azure or Aconex.
  • Knowledge of CFD analysis, pipe stress analysis, and related mechanical engineering tools is a plus.

Not only do we offer you an attractive compensation package, but also access to a wide range of perks and benefits. For example:

  • Our own medical center, a gym and an in-house barbershop
  • E-bike charging stations in front of the factory, more than 500 free charging stations for electric cars, a bike leasing program, free use of the nextbike bike-sharing fleet, as well as numerous free shuttle bus routes to Grünheide and the surrounding areas
