Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant Hepatologist in Hepatology within the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. This is a new post to support increased demand for our secondary and tertiary care services. Applicants with sub-specialty interests are encouraged to apply and there are opportunities to support and enhance services across the breadth of Hepatology.

You will join an enthusiastic and cohesive team of 18 Consultant Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists working in one of the largest acute hospitals in the country. The catchment population of Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is approximately 675,000 people. The new University of Portsmouth Medical School opened in September 2024 and there are excellent opportunities for teaching and clinical research. 

Portsmouth provides easy access to beautiful countryside including the South Downs and New Forest National Parks. There are excellent seaside and sailing facilities and the city is only an hour and a half from central London. The area offers all the lifestyle opportunities of metropolitan, rural and coastal life.

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003 or Specialist Doctors. For this locum consultant post, applicants should be on the GMC specialist register via CCT, CESR or European Community Rights.

This is a 12 month fixed-term post for a Locum Consultant Hepatologist. The role will comprise a mixture of outpatient clinical work, endoscopy and in-patient care, with supporting professional activity time.   The successful candidate will join a team of 16 consultants in Gastroenterology and Hepatology with a wide range of specialist interests including advanced endoscopy, IBD, clinical nutrition, hepatology, ERCP/EUS and upper GI therapeutics. They are supported by a team of 7 registrars, 3 clinical fellows in endoscopy and several clinical nurse specialist teams, including 5 Hepatology Clinical Nurse Specialists.  Candidates with a wide range of sub-specialty interests will be considered for this post as there are opportunities to support and develop services across the breadth of Hepatology. Provision of ERCP and / or EUS is not a requirement for this post, but it may be possible for this to be included for those with a Hepatobiliary sub-specialty interest.  

This post will include a commitment to in-patient care of Hepatology specialty patients (currently in 3 week blocks; typically 25-30 in-patients).  There is no direct post take of cases unless the patient has been admitted directly to the Gastroenterology and Hepatology ward.  This post may include a commitment to the out-of-hours rota (currently 1:9), which delivers a 7-day emergency out-of-hours endoscopy/gastroenterology service, including weekend / bank holiday review of selected in-patients.  

The successful candidate will work within the Portsmouth hepatology service, which since 2010 has grown rapidly to become one of the largest in Southern England.  There are established links for liver transplantation with the Royal Free Hospital, including a joint 2-monthly satellite clinic at Queen Alexandra Hospital. There are comprehensive diagnostic and interventional GI radiology services, including provision of TIPSS and locoregional therapy for HCC.  An excellent specialist nursing team provide treatment of chronic viral hepatitis, management of stable cirrhosis and virtual management and monitoring of haemochromatosis and autoimmune liver disease. We are a core member of the Wessex Hepatology ODN, providing treatment of Hepatitis C and second-line therapies for PBC. Our services for alcohol-use disorders, MASLD/MASH and HCV have received national recognition and we have a thriving clinical trials programme supported by a hepatology research fellow.

This is an excellent opportunity to join an enthusiastic, innovative and expanding unit.  A business case is currently in development for a substantive Consultant Hepatologist post. Development of sub-specialty interests is encouraged.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • MRCP or equivalent

 

Desirable

  • Sub-specialty accreditation in Hepatology
  • Higher Degree (e.g. MD/PhD)

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT in Gastroenterology (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights (for Consultant role)
  • Wide experience of Hepatology and Gastroenterology
  • Certified training in upper GI endoscopy

 

Desirable

  • Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT in General Internal Medicine (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights
  • Experience of service development

Knowledge

  • Able to demonstrate appropriate level of clinical knowledge
