ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE: Pomona College, established in 1887, is the founding college of the Claremont Colleges, a consortium of five undergraduate institutions and two graduate institutions in Claremont, CA, on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. Pomona College has a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum spanning the arts, humanities, social sciences, math and sciences, emphasizing critical thinking and high-impact practices. Pitzer College, established in 1963, was founded as an innovative liberal arts institution, initially specializing in social and behavioral sciences, but has since expanded to other fields. Pitzer’s academic programs emphasize social justice, intercultural understanding, and environmental sensitivity. The 21 varsity Pomona-Pitzer Athletic teams comprise of students from both colleges, and compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the NCAA Division III. The Colleges have a combined enrollment of 2,600 students.

JOB PURPOSE: The Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Assistant Coach will support the head coach in all aspects of leading a nationally competitive Division III program. The ideal candidate is committed to the student-athlete experience and capable of balancing competitive excellence with academic priorities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:The Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Assistant Coach will provide opportunities and responsibilities in the areas of track and field that include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsibilities include assisting the head coaches with the organization and implementation of practice plans and instruction for Shot Put, Discus, Hammer, and Javelin;

  • Developing competition-day strategies and tactical planning; assessing and recruiting potential student-athletes;

  • Evaluating competition sites and creating scouting reports;

  • Assisting with home meet hosting duties, camps, and clinic operations;

  • Supporting player communication and feedback;

  • Overseeing team equipment; and assisting with the management of social media accounts.

Assistant should be familiar with, and work to remain compliant with, college, SCIAC, and NCAA DIII rules and procedures. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

ADDITIONAL DEPARTMENT DUTIES AND OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Serving as a home contest manager for other varsity sports.

  • Supporting Athletics Communications and Operations (statistics, media coverage, event setup).

  • Assisting with club sports administration.

  • Year-long opportunities in facility oversight, wellness programming, and departmental committees.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience required; previous playing or coaching experience is required. Capacity to positively interact with and support a culturally, ethnically, economically, and socially diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

  • Licenses/Certificates: A valid driver’s license is required or an equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events.

  • Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience as a coach at the collegiate or professional level of athletic

REQUIRED HOURS: This part-time position's hours are15-20 hours per week, depending on the competitive season.Must be available for extensive weekend and evening hours during the season. Travel may be required. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule.

ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS:This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefit-eligible position. The hourly rate for this role is $16.90 per hour. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior role. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
