Sr. Electrical & Controls Engineer (Division Level)
Locations: Phenix City, Alabama I Winder, Georgia I McPherson, Kansas I Defiance, Ohio I Willows, California I Littleton, Colorado
Remote: Scheduled work from home days
This candidate needs to be based in Colorado, or close to one of our Insulation Systems facilities where they can work onsite 3-days a week and WFH 2 days. Travel 50%
We have 2 positions open - one in our Insulation Systems Division (plant locations) and one for our Corporate Engineering Division (Littleton)
The candidate must be located in Littleton, CO or near one of our IS plant locations—ideally McPherson, KS; Defiance, OH; Phenix City, AL; Winder, GA; or Willows, CA. Proximity to an IS plant is essential to support on-site collaboration and operational needs. When not traveling, this role will follow a hybrid work schedule.
The Senior Electrical & Controls Engineer provides electrical and controls engineering expertise for the implementation of capital projects across Johns Manville's Insulation Systems (IS) Manufacturing Operations.
This role combines technical engineering leadership, internal consulting, and hands-on project management. The engineer will be responsible for developing, scoping, coordinating, justifying, implementing, and managing industrial electrical and control system projects from initiation through completion.
Responsibilities include preparing engineering calculations and designs, technical specifications, cost estimates, schedules, project justifications, training materials, and documentation for manufacturing facilities throughout North America.
The ideal candidate brings strong Allen-Bradley PLC and HMI programming expertise, proven capital project leadership, and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, suppliers, and plant personnel.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform power and electrical control systems engineering for all aspects of manufacturing projects.
  • Prepare and review technical electrical specifications for equipment and process projects.
  • Support the Corporate Electrical Group in reviewing and implementing corporate specifications and standards.
  • Assist manufacturing facilities with operational needs and electrical safety initiatives.
  • Provide project management and oversight across all project phases, managing multiple assignments concurrently and driving them to completion.
  • Ensure compliance with technical specifications and contractual requirements for equipment and services.
  • Maintain effective communication with management and project stakeholders regarding project status, issues, and changes.
  • Coordinate and oversee suppliers, contractors, and external engineering resources, including commissioning, startup, and training of plant personnel.
  • Develop bid request documentation, supplier lists, and bid evaluations, and provide purchasing recommendations.
  • Manage project budgets, forecasts, schedules, scope, deliverables, execution, and reporting to achieve expected business benefits.
  • Support remote manufacturing facilities with root-cause failure analysis and corrective action plans.
  • Assist with the development and review of electrical standards.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior engineers as needed.
Expected Workload Distribution:
  • 70–80%: Project electrical engineering and project management.
  • Approximately 10%: Plant support and standards review/development.
  • Remaining time: Related engineering and operational support activities.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • Minimum 5 years of control systems engineering experience in a continuous and/or discrete manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated electrical and control system engineering capabilities.
  • Proficiency with Allen-Bradley PLC and HMI applications, including programming, and communications within enterprise and control network systems.
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities, including:
    • Experience as Lead Electrical/Controls Engineer on at least one major or complex project with responsibility exceeding $5 million.
    • Successful management of projects valued between $500,000 and $2 million.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70E – Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, including arc-flash energy and shock hazards.
  • Ability to develop complex and innovative solutions to project and process engineering challenges.
  • Ability to manage and support multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to influence multidisciplinary teams and management and execute plans while meeting project milestones.
  • Experience collaborating with internal and external engineering resources.
  • Initiative to complete assignments, identify improvement opportunities, and drive sustained execution.
  • Ability to design and execute projects across North America.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 40–60% of the time.
  • Must be located in Colorado or within commuting distance of an Insulation Systems facility to support a hybrid schedule and onsite collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience engineering and implementing 480V electrical systems, including:
    • Switchgear
    • Power distribution panels
    • Motor control centers (MCCs)
  • Experience with 4160V power distribution systems.
