Sports Director

GENERAL FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Sr. Program Director, the Sports Director coordinates and supervises the day-to-day operation of the sports programs which includes planning, promoting, creating, and coordinating programs in accordance with the policies and accepted purpose of the Association. This also includes maintaining records, scheduling staff, and ensuring proper gym maintenance. The Sports Director also networks with a variety of community organizations to promote and meet program needs. The Sports Director, along with all other Department Directors, assumes a general supervisory role over the entire facility and staff at all times.

Principle Activities:

• Gives direct leadership to the following program areas, including hiring, training, supervising and evaluating of all staff and volunteers, budget development, and scheduling: Sports, Judo, Gymnastics, Youth Development

• Responsible for the development and implementation of new and innovative youth/adult/family program opportunities

• Supervises and helps maintain the safe and effective use of all facilities in cooperation with other program staff

• Assist with gym and other areas usage scheduling

• Attends and contributes to all required committee and staff meetings

• Keep accurate records and files associated with areas of program responsibility, and uses these records to determine program and budget strategy

• Become involved with at least one community service organization, and represent the YMCA in a positive way to the community

• Evaluate department goals as they relate to the YMCA strategic plan

• Help develop program marketing materials

• Assume responsibility for overall membership recruitment, satisfaction and retention

• Assume a leadership role in the Annual Support Campaign to build Strong Kids, Strong Families and Strong Communities

• Responsible for the overall supervision and upkeep of the Findlay YMCA facilities, and services to members and guests

• Communicate regularly with the Sr. Program Director

• Assume other responsibilities as needed in order to maintain and enhance the delivery of service of the Findlay YMCA

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in physical education, Recreation, or related field and/or equivalent experience
• Passion for and commitment to the YMCA’s mission
• Strong customer service orientation with the ability to relate well with a diverse set of youth, parents, and volunteers. Demonstrates safe and age-appropriate strategies in interactions with youth.
• Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills
• The director must have a thorough understanding of the YMCA philosophy with regard to developmental and sports programming.
• The director must be able to articulate clearly the YMCA purpose and philosophy to youth, adults and the community at large.
• The director must possess the skills necessary to hire, train, and supervise staff, develop budgets, manage facilities, and communicate effectively with the public.
• Well defined administration skills and proven abilities in the area of personnel management, program planning, budget, public relations, record keeping, maintenance and safety are required.
• The director must be capable of working both independently, and as a team member in order to accomplish the association’s short and long-term goals.
• Current, relevant sports training and certifications (e.g. CPR for Professional Rescuer) or the ability to be certified within 30 days of hire
