Job Description

The Software Engineer/Control System Specialist supports the Process Control Division and collaborates with other North American Flat Roll facilities. The position is responsible for designing, developing, testing, implementing, and supporting digital solutions and process control systems. The role contributes to AI and digital transformation initiatives, system modernization, and reliable production operations. The position requires strong technical capability, initiative, sound judgement, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented industrial environment.

As an integral member of a highly skilled and innovative team, this position supports North American Flat Roll and Great Lakes Works’ AI-driven digital transformation and system modernization strategy while providing critical support to production operations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Development, design, testing, implementation, and continuous improvement of digital solutions and process control systems that enhance operation performance, reliability and efficiency
  • Contribute to our AI / digital transformation by participating in the design, development, configuration, deployment and support of AI and digital solutions
  • Play a key role in the new design and maintenance of modern supervisory and control systems
  • Participate/Lead high impact projects that provide financial benefits that result in improvements to safety, quality, and or production yield
  • Work closely with the operations teams to understand requirements and identify improvement opportunities; translate into project specifications, including work estimates and forecasted benefits
  • Design and maintain highly available and error resistant applications and systems that support the North American Flat Roll operations
  • Specific Experience Required
  • Software Engineer / Developer with minimum of 1-2 years of experience developing in Java, C, C#, C++,  R, and/or Python
  • Knowledge of the Visual Studio IDE
  • Development experience in iFix, Cimplicity, Ignition
  • Experience with Tableau a plus
  • Experience with SQL and Oracle a plus
  • Experience in industrial manufacturing setting a plus
  • Comfortable with both Linux/Unix and Windows environments
  • Comfortable with AI and IIoT applications
  • Programming experience in Ladder Logic and/or Control Block Language
  • Ability to read P&ID and electrical schematics
  • Experience with SCADA/HMI systems
  • Technical Skills Required:
  • Java, C, C#, C++, R, and/or Python
  • Visual Studio
  • Linux and/or Windows
  • PLC Programming, SCADA systems, HMI design
  • Industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP)
Professional Skills Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • Effective oral and verbal communication
  • Initiative to generate ideas
  • Motivation to maintain a high level of productivity and self-direction
  • Ability to work in team-oriented environments
  • Desire to learn established systems for purposes of modernization and support
