Summary

Do you want to help build some of the largest and most consequential enterprise and customer technology systems in the world? Join Apple’s Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) organization. IS&T is the engine behind everything Apple does for customers and for the people who build for them. It’s Apple’s central nervous system. Supporting 2.5 billion active Apple devices, processing billions of secure transactions, and keeping the technology that defines modern life running flawlessly, IS&T makes the impossible feel effortless. Do you love building solutions to handle global complexity and immense scale? Imagine what you could do here.

Retail and Marcom Engineering, an IS&T team, builds and operates the systems and experiences that connect Apple's products with its customers. The team owns the technology behind both Apple's online and physical stores and drives the interactive marketing experiences and tools that keep creative operations moving. Together, those functions deliver the technology behind every product story Apple tells and every purchase a customer makes.

Description

As a Site Reliability Engineer your primary responsibilities include ensuring system reliability and availability. This involves monitoring performance, participating in on-call rotations, and helping to design highly available systems. You also automate and manage infrastructure, implementing Infrastructure as Code. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, documenting systems, and planning for capacity and scalability are crucial.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the health, performance, and availability of production systems, and respond to alerts to maintain agreed SLOs/SLAs
  • Participate in on-call rotations, acting as a first responder to production incidents — triaging, diagnosing, and resolving issues across the full stack (infrastructure, backend services, and client-side/front-end).
  • Design, build, and maintain highly available, fault-tolerant systems across on-premise and cloud environments (AWS/GCP), incorporating redundancy and failover best practices.
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning and configuration using Infrastructure as Code and configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Terraform)
  • Develop and maintain operational tooling and automation scripts in Python or Go to streamline workflows, improve observability, and reduce repetitive manual work
  • Administer and optimize Kubernetes clusters and container orchestration for scalability, resilience, and efficient resource utilization
  • Conduct capacity planning and performance tuning — analyzing traffic patterns, resource utilization, and application behavior to proactively scale systems ahead of demand
  • Perform root cause analysis on incidents and participate in postmortems, translating findings into concrete reliability improvements and preventive automation
  • Document system architecture, runbooks, and operational procedures clearly for both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Contribute to the ongoing evolution of reliability practices and infrastructure automation standards across multi-platform cloud and on-premise environments

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3 years hands-on experience as a systems, storage or cloud engineer
  • Knowledge of Linux (OEL, RHEL, CentOS) utilities and programs
  • Expertise in version control systems (Git, SVN), automated build and testing (Jenkins, Vagrant)
  • Expertise in Kubernetes platform, on-premise or Cloud
  • Expertise with at least one cloud infrastructure platform (AWS, GCP)
  • Understanding of enterprise storage platforms (NetApp, Isilon, Object Storage, etc.)
  • Experience with configuration management (e.g. Puppet, Ansible)
  • Understanding of virtualization technologies (VMware, KVM)
  • Experience automating workflows with Python or Go
  • Knowledge of networking technologies including IPv4/IPv6, DNS, network segmentation, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in an SRE role including technical ownership of production systems at scale
  • Background supporting high-traffic, consumer-facing web platforms
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills — able to articulate, document and otherwise communicate technical concepts/details to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Working knowledge of basic web technologies including HTTP, HTML, CSS, JS etc. and hands on experience debugging web applications at the network/protocol level
  • Experience with GitOps infrastructure automation
  • Experience with multi-platform cloud and on-premise applications at scale, particularly with AWS and/or Alicloud
  • Experience building web applications and services at scale in Go
  • Experience performance-tuning web applications, especially across all contributing factors
