Shelter Associate – Third Shift, Full-Time

At Upper Valley Haven, we provide temporary shelter, supportive housing, food access, and problem-solving support to neighbors experiencing hardship. We are currently seeking compassionate, reliable, and team-oriented individuals to provide overnight support across our shelter programs.Please note that all third-shift positions are awake shifts.

Saturday through Wednesday
12:00 AM – 8:30 AM
40 hours per week
Schedule is split between Hixon Adult Shelter and Byrne Family Shelter.
About the Role
Shelter Associates play a vital role in creating safe, welcoming, and supportive environments for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Working directly with shelter guests, you will help maintain daily operations, respond to guest needs, support community expectations, and contribute to a positive living environment.
This position is ideal for individuals who are compassionate, adaptable, and able to balance empathy with accountability. Successful candidates will be comfortable working with adults, children, and families from diverse backgrounds and will approach their work using a trauma-informed, strengths-based lens.
What You'll Do
- Build positive and supportive relationships with shelter guests
- Welcome new guests and help orient them to shelter expectations and policies
- Maintain clean, safe, and welcoming shelter spaces
- Assist with housekeeping, laundry, room preparation, and daily cleaning tasks
- Conduct regular building and campus safety rounds during overnight shifts
- Respond calmly and appropriately to crises, conflicts, medical concerns, and behavioral challenges
- Complete shift notes, incident reports, and other required documentation
- Communicate important information to supervisors and coworkers and contact emergency services when needed
- Collaborate with Service Coordinators, Shelter Associates, managers, and other staff serving guests
- Support special program activities and events
- Participate in team meetings and supervision

- Understanding of the impacts of homelessness, poverty, mental health challenges, and substance misuse
- Flexibility, adaptability, and willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team
- Ability to remain calm and respond effectively in stressful or crisis situations
- Comfort working in environments serving adults, families, and children of all ages and needs
- Commitment to working overnight hours, including weekends and holidays
- Ability to bend, lift, walk on varying terrain, and remain active throughout a shift
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification, or willingness to obtain; training is available if needed
Preferred
- Experience working in a shelter, residential, human services, or related setting
- Experience supporting people affected by homelessness, poverty, mental health challenges, or substance misuse
Compensation & Benefits
Starting Pay: $22.00 per hour, plus a $1.50 per hour shift differential for third-shift staff
