About the Team:
Every time a customer opens a Walmart product page, in any of our markets, a decision engine works behind the scenes to choose the right seller, the right price, and the right delivery promise, shaped by what that customer cares about. That’s us.
The Buybox team owns the offer-selection that powers Search, the Product Details Page, and Recommendations. These systems serve high-volume traffic on a tight latency budget, so every millisecond and every design decision counts. Getting it right matters to customers, to sellers, and to Walmart’s business.
We’re a small team that works like a startup inside one of the world’s largest retailers. Ideas move quickly from whiteboard to production. Engineers own systems end to end, and AI agents are part of how we build every day. We like hard problems, honest debate about design, and helping each other get better.
What You'll Do:
- Design and build high-throughput, low-latency services that power offer selection and pricing at scale.
- Build and evolve the streaming and batch pipelines (Kafka, Flink, BigQuery, Airflow) that feed our algorithms and AI/ML models.
- Partner with data scientists to take ML models from experiment to production, and measure real customer impact through A/B tests.
- Build with AI agents and AI-assisted development, and help shape how the team uses them.
- Lead design and code reviews, and help us move faster, from PR to build to canary deploy.
- Build the tooling that keeps our decisions trustworthy: flip analysis, parity testing, and experiment dashboards.
- Drive technical discussions with product, science, and partner teams across Search, Item Page, and Recommendations.
What You'll Bring:
- 5+ years building production software, including 3+ years in Java and/or Python.
- A strong foundation in distributed systems, data structures, and algorithms.
- Experience building and operating microservices (REST/GraphQL) that are highly available, fault tolerant, and scalable.
- Hands-on experience with streaming systems such as Kafka or Flink.
- Experience with a public cloud (GCP or AWS).
- Comfort owning ambiguous problems end to end and driving design decisions across teams.
- The ability to explain complex technical ideas clearly to engineers and non-engineers alike.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Experience building production-grade AI/ML systems.
- Experience with experimentation platforms and A/B testing at scale.
- Familiarity with BigQuery, Airflow, or ML pipeline tooling [e.g., TensorFlow/Kubeflow].
- Background in pricing, marketplaces, offer ranking, or e-commerce.
- Node.js or React, for internal tooling.
