Senior Scientist - HPLC

Location: Thousand Oaks, CA

Onsite Flexibility: Hybrid

Contract Details

  • Position Type: Contract
  • Contract Duration: 6 months
  • Pay Rate: $45.00–$48.00 / Hour (USD)

Job Summary

The ideal candidate is a hands-on analytical scientist with strongHPLC and small-molecule pharmaceutical experience, a solid foundation in analytical method development and testing, and the ability to quickly contribute in the lab. They should be able to clearly communicate their technical work, think through scientific problems, and work effectively within a collaborative team.

With minimal supervision, plans, conducts, or monitors experiments, records and organizes data, analyzes results, generates robust and reliable data, and/or ensures that contracted studies are conducted in compliance with the respective protocol and applicable guidelines and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor or follow established experimental design and protocols and perform routine tasks and studies to obtain reproducible and reliable results with limited supervision.
  • Plan, monitor or conduct, analyze and record experiments, and provide interpretation of data.
  • Effectively transfer experimental methods from literature to the lab and make modifications as necessary. Develop and implement new protocols with moderate review.
  • Engage coworkers in scientific discussions.
  • Communicate data and interpretation to work group.
  • Develop systems to ensure quality data.
  • Utilize standard laboratory equipment and one or more major laboratory instruments/techniques.
  • Effectively troubleshoot equipment and experimental difficulties.
  • Contribute to internal/external reports, papers, presentations, regulatory documents, invention disclosure submissions and/or patents.
  • Participate in department-wide support efforts such as safety, recruiting, and committees.
  • May train staff and/or supervise others.
  • Coordinate and organize resources needed to complete the task.
  • Understand when to seek input and when to make independent judgments.

Required Skills

  • UHPLC, GC, Karl Fisher, and Dissolution method development and execution
  • Analytical method development and testing for synthetic/small molecule drug substance and drug product

Education Requirements

  • Doctorate degree (PhD, PharmD, or MD) and 2 years of experience; OR Master's degree and 5 years of experience; OR Bachelor's degree and 7 years of experience
  • Master's degree with approximately 3–5 years of relevant experience preferred
  • PhD candidates with directly relevant analytical research/industry experience are acceptable
  • Bachelor's candidates may be considered with approximately 10 years of highly relevant experience

Required Experience

  • Doctorate degree (PhD, PharmD, or MD) and 2 years of experience; OR Master's degree and 5 years of experience; OR Bachelor's degree and 7 years of experience

Nice-to-Have Experience

  • Local candidates preferred, but candidates willing to relocate independently can be considered

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Interview process: 1 phone interview followed by approximately 5-hour on-site interview with team

Important Notes

  • Red flags that may disqualify a candidate include: little or no hands-on analytical chemistry experience; no meaningful HPLC experience; background primarily in biologics without transferable small-molecule experience; primary experience in synthetic chemistry or materials chemistry rather than analytical chemistry; experience that is too far removed from pharmaceutical analytical development.
