Senior Quality Assurance Engineer

Job number: 989

This is a remote position.

Ad Hoc is a technology company that empowers organizations to deliver scalable, impactful digital services. Using modern, agile methods, our team creates products that meet people’s needs and transform their experience of government.

Work on things that matter

Our collaborations have shaped some of the defining moments in public-sector service delivery. We’ve helped build products that connect Veterans to tailored services, help millions access affordable health care, and support important programs like Head Start. As we work with agencies to deliver critical services, we’re also changing how the government approaches technology.

Built for a remote life

Our culture, communications, and tools are built for remote work, enabling us to bring together top talent nationwide. At Ad Hoc, remote life empowers our teams to design work environments that fit their lives and that foster flexibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes for our customers.

Committed to high expectations and a welcoming culture

Ad Hoc values acceptance, accountability, and humility. We aren’t heroes. We learn from our mistakes and improve the process for the next time. We build small, inclusive teams to collaborate closely with our partners to solve the right problems and deliver software that works.

The Veterans Affairs business unit helps transform the VA into a modern digital services organization where Veteran outcomes are at the center of every effort. We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Senior Quality Assurance Engineer serves as an experienced individual contributor supporting the systems that determine healthcare eligibility and enrollment for Veterans, serving more than 16,000 end users across the Health Eligibility Center and VHA Office of Community Care. Testers on this program work as a shared service across both the legacy and modernized application tracks rather than embedded in a single team. With minimal oversight, you will own testing strategy and coverage for your areas and contribute to the program’s broader engineering practices. Primary expectations include:

  • Own and extend automated test coverage across modernized and legacy applications, including keyword-driven suites and web application regression testing
  • Design and execute API test coverage, and validate data across system integrations and migrations
  • Author, manage, and execute test cases with full traceability from requirement through execution evidence
  • Debug and triage failures, separating genuine defects from environment and test-harness issues, and drive them to resolution
  • Monitor coverage across automated and manual suites, build plans to fill gaps, and direct junior staff as needed
  • Develop testing strategies tailored to the technical stack and skills of the team
  • Present testing strategy, results, and risks to clients, stakeholders, partners, and other engineers
  • Design and maintain dashboards that inform the program on quality trends
  • Participate in planning and design sessions, informing decisions on architecture and implementation so systems are testable from the outset
  • Execute across the full environment chain, including production verification, and coordinate environment availability with DevOps
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies on a two-week sprint cadence; partner with business analysts on acceptance criteria and with developers on defect reproduction
  • Participate in technical interviews with new candidates, and mentor junior team members

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of experience; relevant years of experience may be substituted for education
  • Demonstrates expert-level knowledge in testing methodologies and is able to work with the team on plans that optimize quality versus cost
  • Hands-on experience with test automation, including keyword-driven frameworks
  • Experience with API testing using tools such as Postman or Swagger UI
  • Demonstrated debugging and troubleshooting experience
  • Experience managing test cases and execution in Jira, including Xray or a comparable test management tool
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, valid green card holder, or have been granted political asylum or refugee status
  • Must be able to complete VA onboarding, PIV credentialing, and a Public Trust background investigation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Tricentis Tosca or an equivalent enterprise automation suite
  • Experience with Playwright or a comparable modern web automation framework
  • Scripting in Python, bash, or Windows batch
  • Experience with data validation and data migration testing
  • Prior VA or federal health IT program experience
  • Active Public Trust clearance
