Join our Geotechnical group as a Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Project Manager in Minneapolis, MN, where you'll provide technical leadership for complex underground infrastructure projects throughout the Midwest and beyond. In this role, you'll serve as a trusted advisor to clients and project teams, leading geotechnical investigations, analyses, design efforts, and construction support for challenging underground and heavy civil infrastructure projects.
You will play a key role in growing our geotechnical practice by mentoring engineers, developing client relationships, supporting business development efforts, and guiding projects from pursuit through construction. This is an opportunity to influence the technical direction of major projects while helping shape the future of our growing geotechnical and underground engineering team.
Hybrid Work Environment: Tuesday – Thursday In-Office | Monday & Friday WFHWhat You’ll Do
Lead complex geotechnical and underground projects
Provide technical leadership and engineering oversight for geotechnical investigations, analyses, and designs related to tunnels, shafts, trenchless installations, deep excavations, retaining systems, and other underground infrastructure projects.
Serve as a technical authority
Guide project teams in evaluating subsurface conditions, assessing geotechnical risks, and developing innovative, practical, and cost-effective solutions for complex engineering challenges.
Manage multidisciplinary project delivery
Lead projects and coordinate with civil, structural, water, transportation, survey, and construction teams to deliver high-quality technical solutions that meet client objectives, schedules, and budgets.
Oversee geotechnical investigations and analysis
Direct subsurface exploration programs, laboratory testing initiatives, and interpretation of geotechnical data to support engineering recommendations and design development.
Drive client relationships and business growth
Develop and maintain strong client relationships, support proposal and pursuit efforts, participate in project interviews, and identify opportunities for continued growth within existing and new markets.
Provide construction-phase leadership
Support construction activities through review of RFIs, submittals, value engineering evaluations, claims analysis, field observations, and technical consultation during project execution.
Mentor and develop staff
Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to geotechnical engineers, geologists, and engineering staff while fostering professional growth and knowledge sharing across the team.
Contribute to practice development
Help establish technical standards, improve engineering processes, promote innovation, and support strategic growth initiatives within the geotechnical and underground engineering practice.
Support quality and risk management
Serve as engineer of record, technical reviewer, or quality manager on major projects, ensuring technical excellence, consistency, and risk awareness throughout project delivery.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering; a geotechnical emphasis is preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Minnesota, or the ability to obtain Minnesota registration within an agreed-upon timeframe.
- 10-25 years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in subsurface investigations, soil and rock mechanics, geotechnical analysis, and technical report development.
- Significant technical experience with underground infrastructure, including tunnels, shafts, trenchless installations, deep excavations, or comparable heavy civil projects.
- Experience evaluating excavation support, earth retention, slope stability, groundwater control, seepage, settlement, foundations, and geotechnical construction risks.
- Strong understanding of underground construction methods, constructability considerations, and the relationship between design assumptions and field conditions.
- Experience providing technical oversight, performing quality reviews, and guiding less-experienced professionals.
- Ability to work independently as a senior technical contributor while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary project teams.
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to clients, contractors, and project stakeholders.
- Ability to travel as needed for investigations, site visits, construction support, client meetings, and project coordination.
Advantegous Qualifications
- Master's degree or higher in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Advanced experience in tunnel design, shaft design, microtunneling, pipe jacking, horizontal directional drilling, conventionaltunneling, or other trenchless construction methods.
- Expertise in rock mechanics, ground improvement, instrumentation and monitoring, movement and vibration assessment, groundwater control, waterproofing, or slope and bluff stabilization.
- Experience with numerical modeling and advanced geotechnical analysis software.
- Experience serving as Engineer of Record, technical lead, or senior technical reviewer on large or complex geotechnical projects.
- Experience supporting transportation, transit, water/wastewater, government, mining, or other underground infrastructure programs.
- Experience developing geotechnical baseline reports, geotechnical data reports, geotechnical design reports, risk assessments, and construction specifications.
- Active involvement in professional organizations and technical committees related to geotechnical, underground, tunneling, foundation, or trenchless engineering.
