What you'll do...

About the Team

Expo is Walmart's in-house A/B testing and experimentation platform, developed and supported by Walmart Global Tech Data Platforms to meet the scale and unique requirements of Walmart's web and mobile applications. It enables teams to run statistically sound, experimentally valid tests with low lifecycle cost, allowing for data-driven evaluation of new features and changes.

Expo is used across multiple Walmart customer-facing sites and apps, including walmart.com and international markets. The platform supports incremental rollout, risk reduction, and rapid iteration by letting teams preview, ramp up, or pause experiments as needed. The platform also supports real-time monitoring and provides exhaustive reports for tests.

We are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our experimentation and feature flag engineering team — a high-impact group responsible for building and maintaining the UI and control plane for multiple platform applications within Runtime Platforms. In this role, you will combine deep technical credibility with strong leadership instincts to guide a talented team of engineers, drive architectural excellence, and deliver impactful products in close partnership with Product, UX, and cross-functional stakeholders. This is a hands-on leadership role. You will be expected to engage deeply with the codebase — conducting code and design reviews, contributing to architectural decisions, and setting the technical bar for the team — while also owning the roadmap, planning cycles, and people development agenda.

What You'll Bring

Technical Competencies Frontend Engineering

• Strong foundational understanding of JavaScript and TypeScript, including language internals, async patterns, and ecosystem tooling.

 • Solid grasp of CSS, accessibility standards, and web fundamentals (browser rendering, performance, security).

• Experience with modern frontend frameworks (React preferred) and building scalable component systems and design systems. Backend Engineering

• Strong understanding of backend systems and services, including microservices architecture, RESTful and event-driven APIs.

 • Proficiency with Java and Spring Boot for building scalable, production-grade services.

• Solid experience with both SQL (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (e.g., Cassandra, MongoDB, Redis) databases — schema design, query optimization, and operational considerations.

 Cloud & Infrastructure

 • Exposure to at least one major cloud platform — Azure or GCP preferred — including compute, storage, networking, and managed services. • Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines. Architecture & Design

• Strong command of Design Patterns (GoF, distributed systems patterns) and the ability to apply them pragmatically.

• Demonstrated ability to lead System Design — decomposing complex problems into scalable, reliable, and maintainable architectures.

• Experience writing and reviewing Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) or equivalent design artifacts.

Leadership & Soft Skills

• Proven track record of managing and growing engineering teams of 6–15 engineers.

• Strong communication skills — able to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Experience operating in an agile delivery model with cross-functional squads.

• Comfortable with ambiguity and capable of setting clear direction in fast-moving environments.

• Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and build strong relationships across organizational boundaries.

What You'll Do

Technical Leadership

• Lead and participate in code reviews and design reviews, upholding high standards for code quality, maintainability, and security.

• Develop and present technical design proposals for new features, platform capabilities, and architectural improvements.

• Drive adoption of sound design patterns and system design principles across all team deliverables.

• Champion engineering and operational excellence — improving build pipelines, test coverage, observability, and incident response practices.

Product & Roadmap Ownership

• Collaborate closely with Product Managers and cross-functional stakeholders to translate business goals into well-scoped engineering initiatives.

• Co-own the UX roadmap by partnering with the UX team to define user experience vision, priorities, and standards across platform products.

• Participate actively in annual and quarterly planning — leading estimation, sequencing, capacity planning, and dependency management to ensure reliable delivery.

• Drive initiative execution end-to-end: from requirements and design through delivery, rollout, and support.

People Leadership

• Manage, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of engineers across varying experience levels.

• Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development conversations.

• Build an inclusive, collaborative, and psychologically safe team culture.

• Partner with recruiting to attract and retain top engineering talent.

Operational Excellence

• Serve as an escalation point for on-call incidents, ensuring timely triage, resolution, and post-incident learning.

• Improve SLOs, alerting, and runbooks to reduce operational toil and increase platform reliability.

• Drive a culture of retrospectives and continuous improvement.
