Senior Java Engineer

Role Summary

As aSenior Java Engineer, you will be part of ING's Open Banking & XS2A domain, helping deliver innovative banking capabilities through APIs and modern engineering practices. You will play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining secure, reliable, and scalable payment solutions that support millions of customers worldwide.

This role combines hands-on backend engineering with opportunities to contribute to API design, software architecture discussions, and technical leadership within an Agile environment.

About the Team

The Payment and Settlement Services (PSS) organization is responsible for developing and enhancing ING's global payment platforms and settlement services.

Our teams build and maintain critical banking solutions that are secure, compliant, resilient, and customer-focused. As part of an international organization, you'll collaborate with colleagues across multiple countries while contributing to products that power the future of banking.

What You'll Do

• Design, develop, test, and maintain high-quality backend applications and APIs
• Translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions
• Contribute to software architecture and technical design decisions
• Work with ING frameworks, tools, standards, and engineering best practices
• Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines and automated testing solutions
• Monitor application performance and implement observability practices
• Maintain technical and risk documentation
• Support consumers and stakeholders using your services
• Share knowledge, mentor team members, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives

What You Bring

Required Skills & Experience

• 5+ years of backend software engineering experience usingJava.
• Strong expertise inJava 21+, Spring Boot, and microservices development.
• Experience building secure, scalableREST APIs.
• Strong knowledge ofSQL/NoSQL databases and data persistence frameworks.
• Experience withKafka or similar messaging platforms.
• Hands-on experience withautomated testing and CI/CD pipelines.
• Familiarity withcloud-native and DevOps practices.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and engineering best practices.
• Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working inAgile and DevOps environments
• Understanding software architecture and design patterns
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field

Nice to Have

• Banking or financial services industry experience
• Experience working within large international organizations
• Cloud platform experience such asKubernetes or OpenShift

• Exposure to regulatory and risk management frameworks
• Experience supporting digital transformation or modernization initiatives
