Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to build and run the on-premises data and reporting layer of our provider platform — SQL Server data warehouses, SSIS ETL, and the analytical and data-mining work built on top of them.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, build, and maintain ETL packages in SSIS — control flow, data flow, error handling, logging, and deployment
• Write and optimize complex T-SQL: stored procedures, views, functions, and set-based transformations
• Design and maintain dimensional data models (star schema) and the SQL Server data warehouse supporting provider reporting
• Tune SQL Server performance — indexing, execution plans, statistics, partitioning, and query rewrites
• Build and maintain analytical and data-mining datasets: profiling, segmentation, cohort and trend analysis, and pattern or anomaly detection across provider, claims, and member data
• Implement data quality checks, validation, reconciliation, and monitoring across ETL jobs
• Support scheduled loads and resolve production failures, including root-cause analysis and reprocessing
• Partner with BI, integration, and application teams to ensure data availability and consistency across systems
• Document data flows, package logic, and data models to support internal knowledge sharing
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field
• 5–7 years of experience in data engineering or ETL development on the Microsoft data stack
• Strong, hands-on experience with SQL Server, including T-SQL development, query optimization, and performance tuning
• Strong, hands-on experience building and maintaining ETL packages in SSIS, including deployment and scheduling via SQL Server Agent
• Solid understanding of data warehousing and dimensional data modeling (star schema)
• Hands-on data mining and analytical work: profiling large datasets, segmentation, cohort analysis, and identifying patterns and anomalies in production data
• Strong debugging and production-support skills across scheduled ETL
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional collaboration
AI Knowledge & AI-Assisted Development (Required)
• Daily, practical use of AI coding/assistant tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar) to accelerate T-SQL, SSIS package logic, and analytical query development
• Able to critically review and validate AI-generated code, queries, and transformations for correctness, performance, and data integrity before deployment
• Understanding of secure and compliant AI tool usage, including never entering PHI, member data, or other sensitive information into prompts or external AI tools
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in the US health insurance or payer domain, particularly provider data: demographics, contracts, networks, credentialing — with HIPAA-aware data handling practices
• Experience with SSRS, SSAS, or Power BI consuming the warehouses you build
• Exposure to healthcare data standards (X12 EDI, HL7, FHIR)
• Exposure to migrating SQL Server workloads to cloud (AWS RDS, DMS, or equivalent)
• Relevant Microsoft SQL Server certifications
