Salary Target: $150,000 โ $180,000 base + equity
Our client is a well-funded technology company developing advanced artificial intelligence, computer vision, imaging, and hardware solutions for real-world automotive applications. The Salt Lake City engineering team operates in a hands-on, startup-style environment where engineers work directly with cameras, sensors, embedded computing, and physical hardware to develop and deploy next-generation inspection technology. The team is small, highly technical, and continuing to grow as this area of the business expands.
Job Description:
We are seeking a Senior Embedded Systems Engineer to help design, build, and advance the embedded software and hardware systems behind a sophisticated computer vision and sensor-based platform. This is a highly hands-on engineering position working across embedded Linux, C/C++ and Python development, camera and sensor integration, hardware bring-up, signal processing, and edge computing. The ideal candidate has experience taking embedded products or systems from early development through production and can demonstrate meaningful ownership of what they have built. This engineer will work closely with a small technical team, contribute to architecture and engineering decisions, troubleshoot across software and hardware, and help improve the reliability and scalability of systems deployed in real-world environments. A strong senior engineer is preferred, although exceptional mid-level candidates with the right technical foundation, ownership mentality, and growth potential may also be considered.
Required Skills:
- 6+ years of embedded systems, embedded software, or closely related engineering experience preferred; strong mid-level candidates may also be considered.
- Strong development experience with C/C++ and/or Python in production environments.
- Hands-on experience working with Embedded Linux, including system services, process management, logging, debugging, performance analysis, and system-level troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated experience designing, building, or supporting production-grade embedded systems.
- Strong hands-on experience integrating cameras, sensors, electronic devices, or other physical hardware with embedded computing platforms.
- Experience working with common hardware communication protocols such as UART, I2C, SPI, and GPIO.
- Familiarity with industrial communication interfaces such as CAN, RS-485, Modbus, or comparable technologies.
- Experience with hardware and board bring-up, including the ability to interpret schematics and technical datasheets.
- Comfortable using lab and diagnostic equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters.
- Practical experience troubleshooting problems across software, firmware, sensors, electronics, and physical hardware.
- Experience developing or maintaining camera and sensor functionality including triggering, synchronization, timing, calibration, health monitoring, and fault recovery.
- Ability to take technical work from rapid prototype through stable, maintainable, production-ready implementation.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals including testing, source control, system design, reliability, and maintainable code.
- Experience owning meaningful engineering initiatives or building systems/components end-to-end rather than contributing only to isolated pieces of a product.
- Comfortable working directly with physical technology in a workshop/lab-style environment rather than exclusively in a traditional office setting.
- Willing and able to work on-site five days per week in the Salt Lake City area.
Bonus / Soft Skills
- Experience with robotics, autonomous systems, automotive technology, machine vision, aerospace, industrial automation, imaging systems, or other complex hardware products.
- Experience with multi-camera systems, depth sensing, stereo imaging, laser-based measurement, or related sensor technologies.
- Knowledge of signal processing, sensor calibration, filtering, denoising, depth data, measurement systems, or coordinate transformations.
- Experience working with edge-computing systems where software interacts directly with cameras, sensors, and other devices.
- Technical leadership experience, including mentoring engineers, contributing to architecture decisions, or establishing engineering best practices.
- Experience taking significant ownership of a product, platform, or embedded system over multiple stages of development.
- Active use of AI-assisted engineering and coding tools as part of the development workflow.
- Comfortable using modern AI tools to accelerate development, debugging, research, documentation, and engineering productivity.
- Strong problem-solving ability and willingness to work across traditional software, firmware, and hardware boundaries.
- Comfortable operating in a fast-moving, earlier-stage environment where priorities may evolve and engineers are expected to take significant ownership.
- Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to move quickly without sacrificing long-term reliability or maintainability.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills when working with embedded, electrical, hardware, computer vision, AI, and product teams.
- Demonstrated career stability and enough tenure within prior organizations to show meaningful ownership and completion of significant engineering work.
