What to Expect

Tesla was founded in 2003 with the goal of accelerating the transition to sustainable energy and protecting the planet Earth. Through solar energy, batteries, and electric vehicles, we are building a world of amazing abundance.

At Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, we manufacture the Model Y, and starting in 2027, we’ll produce everything from battery cells to electric vehicles. This is unique in Europe. Our international team consists of over 12,000 employees from 130 countries. We hire talent at all skill levels - prior experience in the automotive industry is not required. Would you like to help write the next chapter in Tesla’s success story and work at one of Germany’s most modern workplaces? Then this is the right place for you!

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Controls Design Engineer for Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg.  This role will require experience from continuous process controls as well as HVAC controls industries. The Gigafactory design team drives to create the factory of the future by overseeing the design of cutting-edge large-scale equipment and utility systems in support of highly innovating manufacturing processes.

What You’ll Do

  • Early equipment concept creation balances product specs, process controls, layout intricacy, costs, quality, and timelines.
  • P&IDs are created for utilities and process machinery.
  • Detailed drawing sets are assembled.
  • Instrumentation is specified, lists (BOQ) compiled, and placement diagrams mapped.
  • Networking architectures and schematic diagrams are outlined.
  • Control/comms wiring is sized and defined.
  • Electrical/electromechanical parts, like valves, solenoids, breakers, starters, and VFDs, are selected and scaled.
  • SOO narratives and functional specs gain input.
  • Tesla guidelines and norms receive contributions.
  • Diverse industrial sensors and devices, such as level, temperature, and pressure transducers, current/power meters, and control valves, are outlined.
  • Vendor RFQs are issued and technical bids reviewed.
  • Tesla protocols are enforced while suppliers are supervised through spec definition, review, and sanctioning.
  • Building and activation phases gain support.

What You’ll Bring

  • 5+ years in industrial controls/automation, with hands-on EPLAN expertise for schematic design and panel layouts as the primary tool. Proven background in utilities (processes, HVAC) or manufacturing, preferably at Gigafactory scale.
  • Proficient in creating detailed electrical schematics, single-line/multi-line diagrams, and cabinet layouts using EPLAN.
  • Skilled in reading, interpreting, and modifying P&ID diagrams for process design and integration, including instrument tagging and loop checks.
  • Experienced in generating BoQ (Bill of Quantities), Cable Lists, IO Lists, SOO (Sequence of Operations), and Cause & Effect Matrices for utility processes and safety interlocks.
  • Expert in selecting and specifying sensors (e.g., pressure, flow, temperature) and actuators like VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), MOVs (Motor Operated Valves), pumps, and field devices for performance and reliability.
  • Strong grasp of process installations (e.g., cooling water systems, piping, heat exchangers) and mechanical system integration (e.g., controls interfacing with pumps, valves, chillers).
  • Familiar with PLC systems (e.g., Siemens S7/TIA Portal) for design integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting – programming not required.
  • Knowledge of German codes and standards (DIN, VDE) and regulations on safety (ATEX, EX), water (WHG), and emissions.
  • Fluent in English; German proficiency is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills for flexible, agile projects.

Not only do we offer you an attractive compensation package, but also access to a wide range of perks and benefits. For example:

  • Our own medical center, a gym and an in-house barbershop
  • E-bike charging stations in front of the factory, more than 500 free charging stations for electric cars, a bike leasing program, free use of the nextbike bike-sharing fleet, as well as numerous free shuttle bus routes to GrĂĽnheide and the surrounding areas
  • You’ll receive subsidized canteen meals, a free S-membership at the Urban Sports Club (discount from M+) and you can sign up for many language courses
  • We also offer all employees a wide range of insurance options, such as a company pension plan, as well as discounts on private insurance and legal protection insurance

These and many other benefits await you. Join Tesla and help us build a world of amazing abundance.

Candidates are expected to uphold and actively promote sustainability principles in their daily work, operating in line with Tesla Global Environmental, Health, Safety & Security (EHS&S) Policy and EMAS requirements, fostering a culture of continuous environmental improvement.
