Job Description

It’s about the journey. Whether it’s a bus ride or flight, our commercial electronic systems help transport millions of passengers every day. Every second a plane takes off somewhere in the world, enabled by our flight-critical products. Be part of our journey at Electronic Systems where you’ll be among the brightest minds, working on the industry’s most difficult problems. Drawing strength from our differences, we’re innovating for the future. Now you can too. Our flexible work environment provides you a chance to change the world without giving up your personal life. We put our customers first – exemplified by our mission: “We Innovate For Those Who Move The World™.” Sound like a team you want to be a part of? Come build your career with BAE Systems.

BAE Systems is seeking a Components Engineer for our Controls and Avionics Solutions (CAS) business located in Fort Wayne, IN.  Being a trusted provider of commercial aircraft solutions, the CAS business also develops and produces highly reliable, adaptable, and scalable avionics solutions for the leading manufacturers of commercial aircraft and their propulsion systems.  As a member of the BAE Systems’ team, you will have the opportunity to work hands-on with complex electronic controls and solve challenging technical problems that enhance our product’s performance and reliability to the delight of our customers.

In this Components Engineer role, the qualified candidate will be the engineering design support interface for electronic and/or mechanical components within the Fort Wayne factory.  The qualified candidate will have an electronic and/or mechanical background and project leadership experience to provide design support for components used in the manufacturing of commercial aerospace controls and electronics.  Day-to-day activities will include providing liaison engineering support – technical engineering guidance and project leadership – for aircraft electronic control components between the design engineering organization in Endicott, NY and the Air Transport (AT) Operations teams in Fort Wayne, IN and Guaymas, MX, as well as working with our customers (Boeing) and numerous suppliers.  The goals of this role involve sustaining the component pipeline for our products in an ever evolving electronics world.

Responsibilities include:
  • Defining, evaluating, and maintaining component performance requirements for electronic and mechanical components.
  • Coordinating resolution of component obsolescence and shortages alongside design engineering and program management, including drafting configuration change documentation and substantiation.
  • Performing electrical analysis, derating, reliability assessments, and environmental qualification testing in support of design changes and production issues.
  • Leading projects to qualify alternate and second-source components through electrical, reliability, and environmental analysis to support existing designs’ performance.
  • Leading value engineering projects with customers and suppliers on cost/risk reduction and producibility.
  • Liaising with Design Engineering in Endicott, New York on design changes.
  • Mentoring junior engineers on component analysis, qualification, and problem solving.

Performance in the role requires strong engagement with Programs, Operations, and Supply Chain to support component performance, quality, reliability, and delivery issues.
Because this role involves a combination of collaborative/in-person and independent work, it will take the form of a hybrid work format, with time split between working onsite in the Fort Wayne, IN manufacturing facility and remote. Some light travel may be required (<10%)

  • General understanding of electronics’ manufacturing process.
  • Proven technical understanding of programmable, electronic, mechanical, and/or electromechanical components and their use in design applications.
  • Familiarity with statistical process control techniques and analytical tools (ex. 6 Sigma).
