This is a senior-level attorney role sitting inside the Compensation and Benefits practice of a major national law firm, focused on advising employer clients across tax-qualified retirement plans, health and welfare plans, and ERISA compliance. The work spans plan design and administration, regulatory filings, correction programs, and employee benefits matters that arise in mergers, acquisitions, and broader corporate transactions. The need is driven by sustained client demand for deep, practical benefits counsel at a sophisticated level.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned employee benefits attorney with at least six years of hands-on ERISA and qualified plans experience, strong drafting skills, and the confidence to serve as a trusted advisor on complex regulatory and transactional matters. You work well across practice groups, bring business-oriented judgment to nuanced legal questions, and hold yourself to a high standard on the details.
Key Responsibilities
1. Advise employer clients on tax-qualified retirement plans, health and welfare plans, and ERISA compliance matters
2. Counsel clients on employee benefits issues arising from mergers, acquisitions, and corporate transactions
3. Draft, review, and update plan documents, participant disclosures, and related benefits documentation
4. Manage compliance testing, IRS and Department of Labor filings, and regulatory audits
5. Lead benefits correction matters and guide clients through regulatory remediation processes
6. Provide clear, practical legal guidance on evolving employee benefits regulations and agency guidance
7. Collaborate with attorneys across corporate, tax, executive compensation, and M&A practices on transactional work
Required Skills & Experience
• Juris Doctor (JD) from a nationally recognized law school
• Minimum 6 years of experience practicing compensation and benefits law
• Extensive experience advising on tax-qualified retirement plans, health and welfare plans, and ERISA compliance
• Demonstrated experience with plan design and administration, compliance testing, and correction programs
• Experience handling benefit plan issues in M&A and corporate transactions
• Proficiency drafting plan documents, participant disclosures, and related documentation
• Experience managing IRS and Department of Labor filings and audits
• Strong analytical, drafting, and written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Skills
• Experience with ESOP transactions
• Familiarity with ERISA plan asset rules
• Large law firm background
• Ability to independently manage sophisticated client matters from start to finish
