About the Role
This seasonal role sits at the center of a high-volume, high-complexity tax season at a leading global professional services organization. You will review and sign off on Canadian (T1) and U.S. (1040) cross-border personal tax returns for high-net-worth individuals and globally mobile employees, ensuring every file meets technical, legislative, and quality standards before it goes out the door.
The ideal candidate brings 5 or more years of Canadian personal tax review experience, ideally paired with meaningful U.S. cross-border exposure. You are comfortable carrying a large caseload under tight deadlines, confident resolving nuanced treaty and residency issues, and genuinely enjoy coaching the preparers around you. Senior reviewers with dual-jurisdiction expertise in complex filings will be considered at the high end of the pay range.
Key Responsibilities
- Review Canadian T1 and U.S. 1040 personal tax returns prepared by staff for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable legislation
- Sign off on completed returns, confirming adherence to tax law and firm quality standards
- Resolve complex cross-border tax issues including residency determinations, treaty application, foreign reporting obligations, and departure tax
- Coach, mentor, and provide structured feedback to preparers to improve efficiency and technical accuracy
- Deliver reviewed returns on time within a high-volume, deadline-driven environment, including extended hours during peak season (March through April)
- Liaise with engagement teams to address escalated technical issues and support resolution
- Maintain thorough documentation and workpapers to support all reviewed and signed filings
- Protect client confidentiality and uphold firm security and quality standards throughout the engagement
Required Skills & Experience
- 5+ years of experience reviewing Canadian personal tax returns (T1); U.S. 1040 experience strongly preferred
- Proficiency with professional tax software such as TaxPrep, CCH Axcess, CaseWare, or comparable platforms
- Demonstrated ability to manage high volumes of complex files under tight deadlines
- Proven experience mentoring or supervising junior tax preparers
- Ability to interpret and apply tax treaties and cross-border legislation
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and problem-solving ability
- English fluency required
- Must have dual monitors and be comfortable working in a fully paperless return environment
Preferred Skills
- CPA designation (Canadian, U.S., or both)
- Prior experience at a Big 4 or mid-to-large public accounting firm
- French language proficiency
- Strong communication skills for translating complex technical issues clearly to both staff and clients
