Position Overview

DTI has an immediate need for an experienced SAP IS-U BPEM (Business Process Exception Management) Consultant to support a long-term utility transformation program in New York.

This role will focus heavily on billing exception management, including the investigation, analysis, and resolution of billing exceptions such as outsorts, implausible results, and other billing/invoicing exceptions. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on knowledge of SAP IS-U Billing and Invoicing and understand how exceptions move through utility billing processes and are identified, analyzed, corrected, and resolved.

Key Responsibilities

• Handle day-to-day SAP IS-U billing exception work, including outsor ts, implausible billing results, failed billing transactions, and other billing/invoicing exceptions.
• Analyze exceptions within SAP IS-U BPEM and determine appropriate resolution or escalation.
• Investigate root causes of billing exceptions and work with functional and technical teams to drive resolution.
• Review and resolve exceptions involving billing master data, meter/consumption information, billing calculations, invoicing, and related dependencies.
• Support BPEM case management, including exception identification, assignment, analysis, resolution, and closure.
• Apply strong knowledge of SAP utility processes to understand upstream and downstream impacts of billing exceptions.
• Work closely with Billing, Customer Service, Metering, functional, technical, and business teams to resolve complex exceptions.
• Support testing and validation of billing and exception-management processes during project releases and implementation activities.
• Document exception scenarios, resolutions, business processes, and recurring issues.
• Identify recurring exception patterns and assist the team in improving processes and reducing exception volumes.
• Communicate effectively with business stakeholders and project team members regarding exception status, root causes, and resolution.

Required Qualifications

• Strong hands-on experience with SAP IS-U Billing and Invoicing.
• Practical experience with SAP IS-U BPEM / Business Process Exception Management or significant hands-on experience managing SAP IS-U billing exceptions.
• Strong understanding of utility billing processes and exception handling.
• Experience analyzing and resolving billing outsor ts, implausible results, billing errors, and invoicing exceptions.
• Understanding of the end-to-end SAP IS-U billing lifecycle and the business/data dependencies that can cause billing exceptions.
• Ability to investigate issues, perform root-cause analysis, and work across functional and technical teams to drive resolution.
• Experience working within an electric, gas, or other regulated utility environment.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with both business users and technical resources.
• Ability to travel at least 25%, with flexibility for additional travel based on project requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting a large-scale SAP IS-U implementation, CIS transformation, or utility billing program.
• Experience with high-volume billing exception processing.
• Knowledge of related SAP IS-U processes such as Meter Reading, Device Management, Contract Accounts, and Customer Service.
• Experience supporting SIT, UAT, defect resolution, cutover, or post-go-live stabilization.
• Previous experience working on complex utility billing transformation programs.

Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate will bring a combination of hands-on SAP IS-U Billing & Invoicing expertise + BPEM/exception-management experience + direct utility industry experience.

This is not intended to be a high-level advisory role. The consultant should be comfortable working directly with billing exceptions, researching why transactions failed or produced implausible results, determining the appropriate resolution, and working with the appropriate teams through closure.
