Job Description

 

Job Title:       Database Administrator IV
Location:       Lackland, TX (on-site)
Supporting:  The Defense Health Agency (DHA)**Secret Security Clearance**

 

Overview

CompTech Computer Technologies is seeking an experienced Database Administrator – Level IV to provide advanced database administration, support, and technical leadership, in support of the Defense Health Agency (DHA). This position holds overall responsibility for the strategic planning, implementation, administration, maintenance, security, availability, integrity, and performance of critical enterprise database systems and data assets.

The ideal candidate will bring extensive hands-on database administration experience, expert knowledge of database architecture, performance tuning, security protocols, and demonstrated expertise supporting secure, highly available database environments. This position requires the ability to independently manage complex technical tasks, provide subject matter expertise, guide junior database administrators, and translate functional and technical requirements into effective database and storage solutions. The Database Administrator IV will also serve as a site lead and supervise all database administrators while maintaining comprehensive technical documentation and operational procedures.

Scope of Work

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic planning, implementation, administration, and sustainment of enterprise database management systems and hosted databases.
  • Install, configure, maintain, and administer database management systems, including creating and managing databases, snapshots, clones, and backups.
  • Monitor database health, availability, capacity, performance, and integrity, proactively identifying and resolving potential issues to minimize outages.
  • Perform advanced database performance tuning, optimization, reorganizations, upgrades, patches, and migrations to meet business needs and service level agreements.
  • Monitor, prevent, and resolve database capacity issues, performance bottlenecks, system errors, and other complex technical problems.
  • Implement and maintain robust database security controls, including encryption, access control, user accounts, permissions, and compliance with applicable security policies.
  • Ensure database systems comply with Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG), Security Requirements Guide (SRG), and other applicable security and compliance requirements.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting, technical support, and subject matter expertise to sites, developers, third-party vendors, and other technical teams.
  • Support database service selection, high availability solutions, and testing of environment changes in coordination with site personnel and architecture and engineering teams.
  • Assist architecture and engineering teams with defining functional requirements, data relationships, attributes, data flow, storage requirements, and data output and reporting capabilities.
  • Support data management functions, including data dictionary expertise, metadata definition, and data mapping for application development.
  • Assist with the evaluation, recommendation, and testing of database software products and related technologies.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain database standards, procedures, maintenance guides, and operational documentation.
  • Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), knowledge-base articles, contingency plans, and recovery processes for database management systems.
  • Implement and manage monitoring tools, performance metrics, and technical enhancements to improve database reliability, efficiency, scalability, and operational performance.
  • Oversee and participate in the deployment and sustainment of database management systems to accommodate organizational business requirements.
  • Administer day-to-day database sustainment, integrity, security, availability, and operational maintenance activities.
  • Perform system-level database management platform maintenance and upgrades to ensure the appropriate security and operational posture is maintained.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and leadership to junior database administrators and other database support personnel.
  • Supervise all database administrators, providing direction, technical oversight, and guidance on database administration and architecture best practices.
  • Serve as the database administration site lead, coordinating technical activities and ensuring database services meet operational requirements.
  • Perform complex tasks with little to no supervision and exercise independent judgment in resolving technical issues.
  • Collaborate with application developers, systems administrators, cybersecurity personnel, architecture and engineering teams, and other technical stakeholders to support database-dependent applications and services.
  • Follow established incident-management, change-management, configuration-management, security, and maintenance procedures.
  • Participate in on-call support as required to support database availability and operational continuity.

Experience, Education, and Certification Requirements:

Experience:

  • Ten (10) years of progressive experience in database administration or a related IT infrastructure discipline demonstrating advanced proficiency.
  • Demonstrated expert-level experience administering and maintaining enterprise database management systems and hosted databases.
  • Extensive experience with database architecture, performance tuning, capacity management, backups, recovery, and database security.
  • Demonstrated experience installing, configuring, upgrading, patching, migrating, and maintaining database management systems.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining database security controls, encryption, access management, and compliance with STIG/SRG guidelines.
  • Experience monitoring and optimizing database performance, reliability, availability, and scalability.
  • Demonstrated experience with database backup, restoration, recovery, high availability, and continuity planning.
  • Experience supporting data management functions, including data dictionaries, metadata, data relationships, data mapping, and storage requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience providing advanced technical support and troubleshooting for complex database issues.
  • Experience developing and maintaining SOPs, maintenance guides, technical documentation, and knowledge-base articles.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently perform complex technical tasks with little to no supervision.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and supervising database administrators or other technical personnel.
  • Strong analytical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with cross-functional technical teams.
  • Ability to satisfy the security and background investigation requirements associated with the position.

Education:

Master’s degree or applicable equivalency.

Preferred / Relevant Certifications: One is required for consideration.

Commercial baseline and technical certifications applicable to this advanced role may include:

  • CompTIA CASP+ / SecurityX
  • (ISC)² CISSP
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Scientist Associate or equivalent
  • Oracle Database Administration Certified Professional or equivalent

Additional advanced certifications related to database administration, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Azure, cloud technologies, cybersecurity, or enterprise infrastructure are a plus.

 

Security Clearance Requirements:

  • Active Secret Clearance

Salary:

  • $90,000 - $100,000 plus full Benefits, PTO, 401k+
