Job Description
United States Steel Corporation has an immediate opening for a Reliability Maintenance Engineer. The Reliability Maintenance Engineer will provide ongoing technical support to Operating units for the identification of opportunities to increase the reliability of equipment assets to world-class standards. This person will create an atmosphere that supports continuous knowledge transfer between Operating units at the plant level.
Position Summary:
The Reliability Maintenance Engineer identifies equipment issues, leads reliability improvements, and supports preventive and predictive maintenance programs. This role works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, vendors, contractors, and plant leadership to improve equipment performance and support safe, efficient operations.
Responsibilities
- Develop and support equipment reliability and maintenance improvement strategies.
- Strengthen preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
- Analyze equipment performance, downtime, maintenance history, and operational delays.
- Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and ensure corrective actions are completed.
- Identify recurring equipment issues and recommend sustainable improvements.
- Support maintenance planning, job scopes, equipment priorities, and outage activities.
- Develop and improve Preventive Maintenance (PM) tasks, job plans, troubleshooting guides, and equipment-care standards.
- Support equipment upgrades, major repairs, capital projects, installations, and commissioning.
- Partner with Operations and Maintenance to improve equipment availability, throughput, and operating consistency.
- Track reliability performance and communicate progress, risks, and action plans to plant leadership.
- Share reliability best practices across operating areas and facilities.
- Ensure all work complies with safety, environmental, quality, and regulatory requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field preferred. Equivalent maintenance, reliability, or heavy industrial experience may be considered.
- Three to five years of experience in maintenance, reliability, equipment troubleshooting, operations support, or a related technical area.
- Knowledge of Preventive Maintenance (PM), predictive maintenance, equipment reliability, maintenance planning, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Ability to analyze equipment performance and maintenance data to identify improvement opportunities.
- Strong problem-solving, project execution, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Ability to work effectively with hourly employees, front-line leaders, technical teams, vendors, contractors, and plant leadership.
- Ability to support a 24/7 manufacturing operation, including off-shift, weekend, holiday, outage, or extended-hour support as needed.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, reliability, and continuous improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in tubular, steel, finishing, threading, heat treatment, inspection, or heavy industrial manufacturing.
- Knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), work-order management, and equipment-history tracking.
- Experience with predictive maintenance tools such as vibration analysis, oil analysis, thermography, ultrasonic testing, or condition monitoring.
- Familiarity with reliability metrics, including equipment availability, Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), downtime, and PM effectiveness.
- Experience supporting major repairs, outages, equipment installation, commissioning, or startup.
- Knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, structured problem-solving, or other continuous-improvement methods.
- Experience working with union-represented employees.
