Global Payroll Specialist

Location: Mumbai

  • Are you curious, excited by experimentation and always looking to innovate?
  • Do you want to work in embedded payments where you can keep learning and developing whilst getting hands-on experience?
  • Do you want to have the opportunity to play an important role in a rapidly growing and exciting Fintech business?

If so, we would love to connect and collaborate!

Who We Are

Modulr is the payments automation platform that streamlines money movement with accuracy, control and reliability — built to scale. We process more than 200m transactions and over £180bn in payment value on an annualised basis, and we’re trusted by over 6,000 businesses from fast-growing SMEs to global enterprises.

We automate how money moves into and out of a business — payroll, supplier payments, spend management and payment collection — through a single platform, connected to the accounting and payroll systems finance teams already use and underpinned by principal memberships of Visa and Mastercard and direct access to central bank infrastructure.

As a regulated payments provider with over a decade of experience, we’re the platform finance teams trust to run mission-critical operations. Modulr is backed by PayPal, FIS, General Atlantic, Blenheim Chalcot, Frog Capital and Highland Europe, with over 400 employees across London, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Mumbai and Pune.

Purpose of the Role

We're seeking a detail-oriented and organised Global Payroll Specialist to join Modulr's Finance Operations team in Mumbai. In this role, you'll independently own end-to-end payroll delivery across seven countries across India, UK, France, Spain, Ireland, US and Netherlands. Working within the finance team and reporting to the AP and Payroll Supervisor, you'll manage payroll processing, employee benefits, and pension administration across multiple jurisdictions using our suite of payroll systems. You'll be key to ensuring our team members across these regions are paid correctly and on time every time, while maintaining compliance with local statutory requirements in each country.

Key Responsibility

Payroll Processing & Delivery

  • Own the end-to-end payroll calendar across all jurisdictions, ensuring every cycle is planned, run, and closed to deadline without prompting.
  • Confirm salaries, deductions, and tax withholdings across multiple countries with varying regulatory requirements
  • Prepare payroll reports and payment files for processing in local currencies and differing payment methods
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies independently, escalating only material or exceptional issues.
  • Act as the day-to-day point of contact for regional and central finance teams on payroll matters.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Maintain and improve payroll data systems and documentation
  • Identify process inefficiencies and drive improvements across the global payroll function.
  • Develop and maintain payroll policies and procedures for new or acquired entities.

Benefits & Pension Administration

  • Manage employee benefits enrollment and updates across different regional schemes
  • Administer pension and retirement scheme contributions (including UK pension auto-enrolment)
  • Process benefits deductions and verify accuracy in payroll across regions
  • Respond to employee benefits inquiries and requests from multiple jurisdictions

Multi-Country Compliance & Support

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with tax, National Insurance, pension, and statutory deduction requirements across all jurisdictions
  • Prepare and submit statutory payroll returns (RTI, PAYE, social contributions, etc.) to relevant authorities
  • Stay current with payroll legislation changes and ensure timely implementation
  • Maintain accurate and confidential payroll records for multiple countries
  • Resolve payroll-related queries from employees and management across all regions.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for external payroll providers (Deel, Payfit, Vistra), managing the relationship and holding them to service standards.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, HR, or related field (or equivalent professional experience)
  • 3–5 years' experience in payroll administration or processing
  • Experience with payroll systems such as Deel, Payfit, or similar platforms
  • Knowledge of multi-country or international payroll operations
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, particularly with numerical data
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and standard office software
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive employee data
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and manage competing deadlines across multiple time zones with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Flexibility to work hours that cover core UK business hours (10am–4pm GMT/BST), with options including 8am–4pm, 9am–5pm, or 10am–6pm UK time

Desirable

  • Recognized payroll qualification
  • Familiarity with global employment law and tax regulations
  • Experience with pension administration across different countries
